Over the years, there have been numerous memorable renditions of the National Anthem. Who could forget Whitney Houston as she sang at the 1991 Super Bowl just weeks after the first Gulf War started? This song is not about the ones we want to remember. This song is about the versions of the Star Spangled Banner we'd rather forget. Please join me in the misery I had to endure to write this song by listening to the footnoted youtube versions below!

Med - I could have slapped Rosanne's eyes right off her head when she did that. Whoppi Goldberg tried it once too I believe and it was just as bad as Roseanne, no worse - she threw swear words into it as I recall. . I particularly like the way you used and snuck in "anathema". Well played!

What kills me is that everyone is singing it as though it were a funeral dirge. It's a *Victory Song*, you fools! ... and should be done at a brisk, celebratory pace. I can't stand to hear anyone do it, and haven't for the past couple of decades. ... and only people with an actual "voice", good pitch, and the ability to stick to the original music, rather than "personalizing it", should be allowed to sing it at public events. 555, and thanks for allowing me to share in your ventilation at this National Rant-hem.

This was a really great parody to a very unheard of song and an even more unheard of band... Great stories here and a fantasticly original topic to write about.
(artistry) Hey kids, didja know that The National Anthem is actually a parody? Neat idea for a topic, brave way to not rhyme the title refrain.
(Artistry) Wonderful choice of topic. I can't help thinking that there's gotta be a way to turn "bombs bursting in air" into a line about the performances you've mentioned.
(Artistry) Kudos for an original topic...it's just not one I care for. It's hard enough for me to care about my own country's national anthem being butchered, let alone anyone elses. There's an Eddie Izzard bit that's of particular relevance here, but quoting it wil take too long. Just look up the script for 'Dress To Kill'. I'm out.
(Aritstry) Reminds me of "She Tanked". . .Uh, for the future, use symbols like ^ or * or combinations of symbols or the actual small numbers for footnotes, the first time through I thought you had gone mad putting in random numbers in the song:)
