The Lyrics

This original song about living in the 70's was written in 1973 - so, with the benefit of hindsight, it needs a little updating (ie. through the retrospectoscope)............Listen to (and watch) the original song here

I feel a little crazy
I feel a little strange
like I've gone to Finland
...on student exchange
I feel a little edgy
I feel a little weird
It seems that good taste has
...all disappeared

I'm living in the seventies
Partridge Family's on the den TV
I use space hoppers just to get me around
I'm dressed in twenty-seven...
shades of brown

I got me an afro
I got some pet rocks
I got some mail-order
Richie Cunningham socks
I feel a bit clumsy
in my platform shoes
like Gerald Ford every...
time he goes to move

I'm living in the seventies
Charlie trains his angels in threes
They say Watergate
got burgled last week!
Instead of jogging I
usually streak

I'm living in the seventies
I order takeaway Chinese
My Levis flare out from the knees
My T-shirt wants to "Save The Trees"

[ spaced out quaalude tripping ]

weeeeell.....
I feel a bit queasy
I feel a bit scared
I've just seen Linda...
rotatin' her head
I feel a little mixed up
I feel a bit in-sane
I feel like Nurse Ratched
just messed with my brain

I'm living in the seventies
Greg Brady's
surfing IN Hawaii
My beanbag needs restitching please
so I can watch Three's Company

I'm living in the seventies
Princess Leia is my fantasy!
and aint John Travolta such a sexy young dude?
I'd kill to see Pam Dawber
...in the nude

I'm living in the seventies
I'd like to buy a mood-ring please
I meditate while I tai chi
I dot my i's with cool smileys

I'm living in the seventies
I've just bought the "Grease" LP
gee Howard Cosell really knows about sports
At San Clemente, Nixon's in big shorts

I'm living in the seventies
I'm passing on my STDs
My fav'rite record's Silk Degrees
Walt Disney's head is in deep-freeze

The original song is awesome! Of course, in America, we'd order Chinese takeout.
Andria - September 20, 2007 - Report this comment
Yes, Dylan, the original song is awesome, but I think that the parody is better, having missed out on the 1970s by being born in 1980. As for what I think about Chinese takeout, I prefer Sarku or Sakkio Japanese-style teriyaki chicken, and anyone who reads any of Dylan's parodies will find out that he is obsessed with Chinese food. (Sorry, Dylan)

ny fave of the day

Andrea, I think Dylan was just commenting on the Aussie/Yank dialect difference (a favorite topic of Stu's and mine), "takeaway" vs. "takeout"...

Stu, great sendup of a decade that, if there were "delete" buttons for time, would have vanished long ago. 555

as a baby born in 1970, I was there for some of that, at least. Excellent idea, and a skillful execution, Stu!

After tearing strips off the 80s, Maestro McArthur turns his attention to the decade taste forgot, and plays an absolute blinder! I hereby proclaim you high priest of nostalgia parody. Fan-bloody-tastic. 555+++

And after writing "My Time Portal" I thought I was the king of time travel, but you my friend have just stolen my Delorian and taken a trip though time and space for yourself. Hopefully it won't mess up the future... By the way congrats on your marriage to Angelina Jolie.

It is appropriate that "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (with Nurse Ratched) won the Academy Award for best picture in the middle of the decade. But there's nothing cuckoo about this fun spoof of the decade. Well done, Stuart.

Completely cool condensed comedy caper... my fav? "dressed in 27 shades of brown"! I suspect your excellent parody skills were honed, well, between twenty-seven and thirty-seven years ago!

So now we know - Stu is the Australian Forrest Gump! :-)

Excellent stuff, Stu :) "I'm dressed in twenty-seven...shades of brown " had me cracking, as well as the Pam Dawber line. Know where you're coming from slurp !

I'm kinda glad I was too young in the 70s to get most of these references, heh heh. 27 shades of brown was inspired, and I'm going to Google Pam Dawber in a minute here - I don't recall her in "These Women I Desire". 15-15-15 (that's a set of 5s in the 70s, now adjusted for inflation)

thanks Dylan - yup, there's one of them local- dialect-difference things again

thanks Andria for preferring this to the OS, which was very out there at the time

thanks alvin - the amiright trifecta would have to be be SOTM, ABC, and AFD (alvin's favourite of the day)

thanks TT - and although I agree with the delete button, I'd allow 1975 to get through (the year Ms Jolie was born) - thanks Ag

thanks Kristof - I might send an Aussie version to Red

thanks Matthias, my fellow "thisOS" partner - only you and I know what it's like ;-)

thanks JJ, and maybe that's another reason to retain 1975

thanks TJC - my most vivid memory of all those years was watching The Partridge Family for Susan Dey ;-)

Peter, you're like a box of chocolates - I never know what I'm gonna git

thanks Pippin - I only watched Mork and Mindy for her girl-next-door sweetness - I kind of hope nobody has ever seen a nude Pam Dawber

thanks Jack - hmm, I might have to rewrite "These Women I Desire" now, to include Susan Dey and Pam Dawber

Stu, I grew up in the 70s and I still remember them fondly as the decade of conspicuous consumption, where love, peace and save the world turned into sex, drugs and rock and roll... Some of your 70s icons in the parody are pretty scary, but then somehow I always mentally cut the decade off after 1973.. ;-D

(Artistry) You have a retrospectoscope? That explains how you can create this stunning tour de farce through the 70's.
Agrimorfee - October 01, 2007 - Report this comment
(Artistry) Addenda--the use of the number 27 is very much like Weird Al...coincidence? :)
stuart mcarthur - October 01, 2007 - Report this comment
Thanks Merry - it's interesting - what we think of as the sixties were really the years 1963-1973, and the seventies are really 1973-1983 - it seems to take a couple of years before a decade gets the confidence to find its feet

thanks Rex - yes the lens sometimes gets blurry from my teardrops of nostalgia, but otherwise it's really neat - it also manages to retrosepctively predict all the mistakes I've made in my life

Agri: how so? - I picked 27 because I needed a 4-syllable number for pacing reasons and that was the lowest one

(Artistry) The 70s - the age that fashion forgot, according to my sister. Lucky you didn't forget, otherwise we wouldn't have this parody! Great job again!

(Artistry) I don't know why, exactly, but as soon as you said "Chinese Takeout" I got up, paused the video and ordered Chinese, you made me realize I'm hungry! Good parody, although you've got a few lines in the beginning that I was surprise were left untouched, but we all know sometimes that's necessary especially when you are changing the context of the song within' the same realm of the OS. That said, good job, and I'm eating Chinese tonight--totally irrelevant, I know, but dang I'm hungry.

This is awesome! 5s. This seems like what I thought the OS would be.

"Dressed in 27 shades of brown"...you know, my mom might still have that jacket...all 5s, my main man!
