The Lyrics

Well, Senator Reid and everyone else on the hill was expecting Bill Rehnquist to hang up his robes - and they had a plan. But Ms. Sandra Day O'Connor caught everyone by surprise. The dear ol' Dems have a bit of a crocky docket on their hands. I'm on the red side myself. But I just had to write one for the tongued-tied libs on the hill. Think of Stockard in the role of Nancy Pelosi and you might get an idea where THIS one is coming from.
Oh, oy vey, Ms. Sandra Day,
Why'd ya have to go away?
Without Ms. O. there's no way we keep Roe!
We can't, it's canned today.

Pro-life rules will win the day,
But we don't believe that way.
Won't change our minds, you can kiss our behinds.
Let's start the fight today-ay-ay.

We'll protest,
Scream and swear,
Get in Bush's hair,
We won't let his nominees pass.
Keep your fundy laws
off what's in our drawers,
Or we'll fillibuster yer ass!

As for you from Op Rescue,
We know what you wanna do!
We won't kowtow. Hey, you're messing with NOW,
Not just some bimbo fool!

Rhenquist, Rhenquist, leave it be,
Or just plain pissed off we'll be!
We won't sit back, while the SCOTUS you stack!
Please, come back, Ms. Sandra Day!

Stray Pooch, I'm glad to see you write a parody again; don't know the original song, but wanted to say hi.

Why thank you, Royce and hello back to you. It has been a while since I've been bitten by the parody bug at the same time my energy level was sufficient to scratch. But when Ms. O'Connor dropped her bomb I just got to thinking. I have been thinking that "Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee" from Grease could be used for Sandra Day O'Connor for a while, but I never had an excuse to write it. Thanks for the good words!

Stray, you do realize that Sandra was appointed by Reagan. He wasn't exactly a liberal president, was he? Compared to most of the current court, Sandra is considered a moderate conservative. When you further examine the majority of her rulings, she appears to be one of the consistently moderate members of the Court. This is why she's generally referred to as "the voice of reason" in the Court. Note, also, that she ruled against the recent "eminent domain" case. She accompanied the more conservative members of the Court, and in doing so, she supported the rights of the individual over that of corporations. If you want to bash someone for being liberal, bash someone who actually is liberal, like Howard Dean.

MrMac: I am fully familiar with Sandra Day O'Connor's record. I remember when President Reagan appointed her. I admire her greatly and consider her the most important justice (not excluding Justice Rehnquist) on the SCOTUS. There is nothing in this song which REMOTELY bashes her. As I explained in the intro (and as is pointed out in the subtitle) this is from the Liberal POV. I myself am conservative, but I can actually see both sides of an issue. Sandra was the swing vote who consistently voted against attempts to modify the status quo in the abortion issue. Many on the pro-choice side are deeply concerned about Sandra being replaced with a pro-life judge, which would swing the balance of power to the right. As for Mr. Dean I was writing parodies on this site about him before most people knew who he was. See my "Dean, Dean" (Parody of "Green, Green) and my later "Win Wisconsin." Please attempt to retain you sense thereof when reading my parodies.

Why should we put Stockard Channing in any role other than that of the First Lady, Dr. Abigail Bartlet? She would be most upset, assuming the same Justices existed in the "West Wing" continuum. Of course, then, we'd have a real President to appoint a replacement. As for Sandra Day O'Connor, she was the deciding vote that gave Bush the Presidency on December 12, 2000, a date which lives in infamy. She is a traitor to America and I will never pardon her.

LOL. Well I think the mark of an excellent and unbiased justice is that both sides can think of reasons to hate her. You can rejoice in her departure if you wish. But know that her departure will make the SCOTUS far more like Bush wants than her presence did.

*shrugs* You're right, pooch, forget it... The Supreme Court is a joke... much like this country...

Welcome back, Stray Pooch. Another provocative, well-written parody. As was pointed out above, Sandra Day O'Connor was on the correct side on both the eminent domain decision and on 2000 election appeal, and the selection of her successor will undoubtedly be an involved process.

Thank you, JJ. I agree with your position on the cases you cited, but I am not sure "correct" is the issue. Justice O'Connor was honest and non-partisan in her decisions. She decided on the merits of the cases. I remember an early abortion case when she decided to vote against changing the status quo. She said that she didn't want to give the government the right to say you COULDN'T have abortions, because that kind of control over reproduction might open a path for a future court to decide you MUST have abortions. I didn't agree with her decision but I respected her reasoning. Thanks again!

Do you guys think Bush has enough backbone to appoint a pro-life judge? I am a right winger but I KNOW that he's going to "reach to the other side " or if he doesn't that proverbial thorn-in-the-side McCain will make a deal instead of going nuclear. "Bush will apoint a pro-choice anti-gun, pro-comunism judge as long as you promise she'll be nice"/
