Note for cops: I realise there are already 2 dozen parodies to this Beatles OS, and that this is the first to The Carpenters' cover of that OS, but I deliberately chose the "performance by The Carpenters" (as it says above)...........not because it has one less verse and chorus, but because it's slower and sadder

Don Adams died? :-(....Get Smart was one of my favourite shows as a kid, and this was a fitting (and funny) tribute to a great comic actor. 555

Arwen and Rick - thanks to you both, and you're right, he died weeks ago. My second line was originally "I heard yesterday (yeah)" then I got stuck after verse one and didn't finish it. I noticed it again yesterday and decided to finish it

I think it's the best thing the Carpenters did, adagio - I love the long moody intro that gives no inkling of the song it's leading into

you're right JJ - he only did the one known role, but he was born to do it, and I can't imagine anyone else in the role, and all the many memorable lines would not be memorable if not for his nasal, eccentric, and non-subtle delivery - he was not a good actor, and that's part of his uniqueness and charm
