The Lyrics

In 1942 after Pearl Harbor was attacked there was an air raid scare in Los Angeles. This parody isn't entirely based of fact but is just meant to be funny. In the intrest of political correctness I censored the "J" word.
Oh, what a fright
February 1942
America had entered World War Two
Paranoia, what a fright!

Oh, what a fright
Although it wasn't even Hallowe'en
L.A. was like a horror movie scene
Pandemonium that night!

I hear there was a foreign airplane flying high in the air
Was it one of Hitler's Jujubees up there?

Oh, what a fright!
Anti aircraft firing everywhere
At black birds in the dark that were not there
Hocking a tchinik all night!

I dimmed the lights when I heard the air raid siren
Ducked and took cover and obeyed the air raid warden
Oh, what a fright!

Oh, I had a foolish feeling that overwhelmed me
I thought the (slide whistle) were in my parlor having tea.

Oh, what a sap!
When the sun rose we went back to bed
No invasion - were our faces red!
Teapot tempest - what a fright!

I was a dope like my mind was out of kilter
Thought the avocados were raided by Tojo and Hitler.
Am I a sap!
(I'm the sap - not the (slide whistle)
Am I a sap!
(I'm the sap - not the (slide whistle)
Repeat as many times as you like. In this song it doesn't matter.

I like it-555! But in reality the real "Battle of Los Angeles" involved both fighters and AAA, expending thousands of rounds that hit the object to no effect. The object is photographed in the searchlights and is solid with no visible means of propulsion. UFO? No, Germany was transferring advanced tech to Japan by '41 and the Japanese also tested disc craft with exotic propulsion systems based on German designs. But their disc craft were amazingly slow and crudely shaped. In many of the "Foo Fighter" pics with Japanese SALLY aircraft (Ki-21s), the rear gunner makes no attempt to shoot the object(s) down- a clear sign of aerial testing.

Loved the almost rhyme of kilter and Hitler... :-D

As Gore Vidal might have put it: the Axis attacked that foreign country too?

Thanks, Rob, Meriadoc and John - all I know about it is that my folks slept through the whole thing.

Fun Read! Unfamiliar with 'Jujubee' (although i understood the intention) I looked it up and found "American drag queen and reality television personality from Boston, Massachusetts", LOL. Extra points for chucking "Teapot tempest" into the mix :)

Thanks, Peregrin - I thought jujubee was a good name for one of Hitler's high altitude planes. Code name JU.

I visited the observation tower in San Pedro, where lookouts with binoculars scanned the sea for the naval invasion that never came. Super title switch, and loved the varied subs for the final lines, esp. "Teapot tempest". 55.5-decibel sirens.

2E, I was wondering WHY you even referenced German aircraft at all with the "Battle of Los Angeles" since the fear was of impending Japanese attack and invasion? After all, LA sits on the Pacific Coast, not the Atlantic! And of course in '42 Japan had absolutely no capability to invade nor even strategic bomb CONUS. They had no high-altitude long-range strategic bombers but relied on carrier aviation. The JU aircraft you refer to were JU-86P &R models that were converted to unarmed recon for use over the USSR and Britain... but by '42 were obsolete in the West and not needed for the East. The Ju-390 long-range transport that could have been converted into a bomber never was and Himmler would not allow the Japanese to gain access to any as they were reserved for special recon flights near the US and for SS evacuation. Not even Hitler's pilot was allowed to use the Ju-390! He had to rely on the Ju-52 and Ju-290 transports as well as the Bv-222 seaplane. If you look at the photographic proof of the unidentified object, it is an unorthodox solid machine with no visible propulsion system and it moved slowly, hit by thousands of rounds by USAAF fighters and then massive AAA ground fire. No effect whatsoever, so the tech was highly advanced and probably derived from German designs of disc, ovoid, spherical, and cylindrical prototypes with EMG or mercury ion plasma propulsion. By 1945 Japan planned the 6-engine Fugaku bomber but had no ability to build it in any numbers, same for the Renzan. Even if they managed to bomb from high-altitude, the planes could not hope to do any real damage to LA nor any industrial areas. Such long-range aircraft are forced to carry more tonnage of fuel than ordnance! The submarine carrier I-400 could deliver the Seiran floatplanes but they could never carry any real ordnance nor even the Japanese atomic bomb under development at Konan, occupied Korea. So people panicked for no reason at all. The carrier threat was real but they would never be able to get within range of LA w/o being picked up and attacked, especially after the Pearl Harbor blunder (USN had Intel for months on the impending attack and ignored it). Anyway, I do not want to nitpick to death a good parody. I look forward to your next war parody :) Fugaku bomber design: http://images.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfiles/5673/Mk26625.jpg Renzan: http://www.wwiivehicles.com/japan/aircraft/bomber/nakajima-g8n-renzan-rita-bomber/nakajima-g8n1-renzan-rita-01.png Ju-390: http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/LRG/images/ju390.jpg

Herr Arndt - whew! I know that, but people's imaginations were really running wild. Thanks TT, but I can do without those sirens for obvious reasons.

Good parody. Especially liked the teapot tempest. Pity it wasn’t just like that for the UK. I’m originally from London, and my dad used the bomb craters that were once the houses of his friends & neighbours as his childhood playground during the war (until he was evacuated).

Thanks, Andy - England took a beating and it wasn't funny. A lot of people were killed and even Buckingham Palace was damaged. It's a good thing the Nazis didn't overrun Britain.

It's probably a good thing that the Germans didn't get the V-3 guns into action in time b/c they would have hit England at 6000 rounds per hour, eliminating the need for bombers altogether. Same for the incomplete A-9/A-10 ICBM and secondary "rushed" German radiological D-1 and D-2 weapons. And IF the Germans did manage a small mini-nuke it would have been used against the Soviets approaching from the East. No way a So Bf 109 (converted K-4) would have been able to make it to Britain in 1945! Both German bombers He-274 and Ju-488 were sabotaged in France. Hi 2Eagle. Wow, was it really all about the avocados? Nice pacing. And good point about the blackbirds. In the dark of night there's no telling how many of the buggers are flapping around up there

Thanks, Stu - everybody seems to want my avocados.
