"SoHo" is the area South of Houston Street in Manhattan, between Greenwich Village to the north, Tribeca to the south and west, and the Lower East Side to the south and east. Note that Houston Street is pronounced "HOW-stin" rather than "HEW-stin." The New York SoHo, the epicenter of the American pop-art industry since the 1950s, was no doubt named after the London Soho (perhaps Malcolm can enlighten us on that name's origin), and several other U.S. big-city neighbhorhoods are named for it, including Chicago's SuHu, the block between Superior and Huron Streets on the Near North Side; San Francisco's SoMa, South of Market Street; Denver's LoDo, Lower Downtown; and Seattle's SoDo, South of Downtown. Seattle Mariner fans call their team "SoDo Mojo." Which I just might skewer on this site if I can find the lyrics to "The Wreck of the Edgar Martinez," even though it's from October '01.
