The Lyrics

For those of you not from the New York Tri-State Area, I have to explain a reference in the 2nd verse. In 1998, a year before he pitched his perfect game (and it was REALLY hot that day), David Cone did an Adidas commercial with reserve Yankee infielder Luis Sojo. They were at a dance club, and saw people doing a dance inspired by pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez. Sojo asked, "Hey, Coney, why don't YOU have a dance?" Next, we see him in the men's room, practicing in front of a mirror, putting his hands over his head, in the shape of, yes, a cone. A guy comes out of the stall, looks at him as if to say, "What the hell are you doing?" Well, nobody's perfect.
(long instrumental opening)

It was the 18th of July
a day of temperature so high
yes it was.
And that was the day
that he took the mound.

On TV, got a chance to see it.
Previously, Larsen and Wells would be it.
John Sterling was on radio
and told me the truth.

Sterling gave a big smile and said, "Son...

Perfect game was thrown by Cone.
The Yankee Stadium mound was his home.
It can't be denied:
David was right in the zone.

Perfect game was thrown by Cone
my son.
The Yankee Stadium mound was his home.
It can't be denied:
David was right in the zone."

Hey, Sterling?
Is it true what people say
it was the best game of his life?
And, Sterling?
Some bad talk going around town
that Coney used to pitch for the Mets
in a park that was a dive.
And that ain't right!

Hey, Sterling?
I heard some talk about Coney and Sojo subbing
going to the Meatpacking District and clubbing
Dealing in dance and never did he quite get it right.

I heard the game was pitched against Montreal.
Tell me, is that why he got those ballplayers out, all?
Folks say Coney's fastball was hot
and his changeup was ill.

Hey, Sterling?
Met fans say Coney never was much on thinking
but got away from them 'cause their whole team was stinking.
Sterling, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth!

Sterling looked up with a smile on his face, and said, "Son...

Perfect game was thrown by Cone.
Well, well, well, well...
The Yankee Stadium mound was his home.
It can't be denied:
David was right in the zone.

Perfect game was thrown by Cone
my son.
The Yankee Stadium mound was his home.
It can't be denied:
David was right in the zone."

(repeat chorus 'til fade)
