The Lyrics

I'll try once more to post this. While searching for a Thin Lizzy song I came across this. You have to listen to the OS...HERE...to have a chance of getting what I'm going for. Although, I admit, it's quite a stretch.
Bad Syncopation

We’re using bad syncopation
Our attempt to sound real hip
Some measures use anticipation
Designed to make the down-beat flip

We have to…count the break out loud
(lips moving in unison …[1 2 3 4][1 2 3 4 5])
Count the break out loud
(one AND two AND three AND four AND five AND…)
Miff the dancing crowd
(Arthur Murray never told them they’d be days like this…)
Count the break out loud
(will somebody please tell me where ONE is…?)

I heard Brubeck once attempt this
With “Take Five” and with “a la Turk”
Tough licks have their cost
This bad syncopation now has us lost

Count the break out loud
(to us “Time” is just a magazine)
Count the break out loud
(when I nod my head…hit it !)
Feeling mighty proud
(I knew those days at band camp would finally pay-off)
Count the break out loud
(how come the bass-player is done and I’ve got five and a half measures to go…?)

It does appear there is general consensus about this particular round. . .I have to be honest--I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices:)

yeah, went fishing for this yesterday and WHAT ?.....funny concept...as they say, if you make a mistake in music, its a mistake, if ya make it TWICE...its JAZZ !

Very nice. Now, how about "Bad Syncopation" for Carly Simon's "Anticipation"?
AFW - January 11, 2008 - Report this comment

Thanks BAD, alvin, John and AFW.

This would work better as a recording than a written parody, because the funniest lines are not actually sung in the lyrics of Thin Lizzy. I really loved "Time" to us is just a magazine, but as I said that wasn't actually in the song.

Take Five is in 5/4 time - it wasn't made to be danced to, was it? I didn't really hear it in this song, but the idea is unique and the execution was flawless. Like Matt said, this would work better as a recording - too bad Thin Lizzy has a ton of fairly tricky solos in their songs - finding or making a decent backing track would be tough.

(Artistry) Syncopulation - when the music is all f ***** up. Excellent writing on this one.
Agrimorfee - January 18, 2008 - Report this comment
(Artistry) Again, a recording would be great...very few parody artists have written new lyrics, especially against crazy drum rhythms. That does not detract from your scoring, BTW. (the drummer certainly got a workout on this tune, didn't he? ;))

(Artistry) Original idea, and you pulled it off quite well. 555

Thanks to...Matthias-it's a musician joke...Red Ant-Take 5 was in 5/4 time. The way I counted the break on this TL song was a measue of 4/4 and a measure of 5/4. I kinda thought it was pretentious showboating...Rex-funny comment...thanks so much for your vote...Agrimorfee-yes the drummer was burning...actually the band is quite tight...it's just that the songs suck...bpc-thanks...BAD...thank you as well. I guess I was going for the "musician joke" concept here. The lines in ( ) were the musicians talking to themselves or each other in an attempt to stay together during a needlessly complicated instumental break.
