The Lyrics

Most of you know the Rod Stewart version(s). John Diefenbaker (rhymes with "attacker"), a.k.a. Dief the Chief, was the first Prime Minister from western Canada (Saskatchewan), the first to be of neither British nor French ancestry (German), and the first elected by the Conservative Party in 37 years, the first to serve in 32. In 1957, he led an exciting populist campaign that brought the "Tories" back from oblivion and gave them not only the government, but a vigor they hadn't had in 40 years. By 1963, the country was beginning to wish he hadn't. And he actually got more right-wing as Opposition Leader, but he's still his land's Barry Goldwater and its Ronald Reagan. Note that, in Canada, their Liberal party uses the color red, while their Conservative Party uses blue, whereas, in the U.S., it's the other way around.
If I listened long enough to you
I'd find a way to vote for the party blue
knowing that they're nuts
stern-faced, hurts my guts
Still I look to find a reason for the Dief.

Someone like John
makes hard to give my vote
to someone else.
Someone like John
makes it easy to live
with the Liberals on the shelf.

If he tried so hard to change my mind
I'd find a way to keep Pearson way behind.
knowing that he's nuts
stern-faced, hurts my guts
Still I look to find a reason for the Dief.

(instrumental break)

Someone like John
makes easy to give my vote
to someone else.
Someone like John
makes it hard to live
with the Liberals on the shelf.

If he listened hard enough, you know
we'd never have chosen Pearson and Trudeau
knowing that he's nuts
stern-faced, hurts my guts
Still some look to find a reason for the Dief.
This leaves 1891-96, 1911-20, 1930-35 and 1963-93 as yet uncovered in this project. Twelve PMs down, ten to go. Sacre bleu!

I HATE Tim Hardin.

Clever idea, but I really have trouble connecting with Canadian politics of 45-50 years ago at this particular moment. Love the original Tim Hardin song...didn't really care for the Rod Stewart version all that much, although it had it charms, I really preferred the straight-foward style of the Original version on this one. Probably because my late brother used to sing it that way a long, very long time ago (late 60's). I would guess that this probably puts me in a distinct minority, but what can you do? You've gotta go with the version that you really like...Donald Rumsfeld might say that...if he could get his head out of his ass long enough to listen to a 3 minute song...doubtful...See? Now THERE'S a subject I can warm up to quickly these days...Anyway, I didn't vote - like I said, the subject matter left me flat here. But ya gotta try stuff, and I'll give ya credit for that, MP ~ ~ ~
