The Lyrics

i was listenin' to that kid o' mine
he said a-something that hurt my pride
he told a friend of his, that i'm old and...
pointed out why it was so
cause he said...
its sad to see your father slip
find that he has lost his grip
suddenly, i realized...dad seems mesmerized

old dudes are like that...old dudes are like that
its tough when dads get hazy...old dudes are like that
old dudes are like that...old dudes are like that
i'd say that old geezer's fuzzy...old dudes are like that

he acts funny, i can see...picture of senility
used to be a normal guy...but the times have passed him by
do you know you gotta watch your pop
when cerebral functions stop
someone that you thought so wise...now you sympathize

old dudes are like that...old dudes are like that
in time, their brains get lazy...old dudes are like that
old dudes are like that...old dudes are like that
you'll find them actin' crazy...old dudes are like that

something snaps deep inside
sometimes sayin'...lordy, it won't be long

he's got this feeling inside...spaced out and quite dim
sadly, i don't know him no more

just a touch of lunacy...makes ya holler, mercy me
still he is a lovely guy
its enough to make ya cry
though he's got a lot of pep
upstairs, he has lost a step
its a fact he can't disguise
sadly, i've surmised

old dudes are like that...old dudes are like that
no longer fresh as daisies
old dudes are like that

Eh, Sonny? What was that ya' said? "Old Dudes are all bats? Could ya' speak a little louder, please...I guess I'll have to set my hearing aid up to all "5's"...then maybe I can hear this parody in my head. Good job, sonny...keep this up and ya' might amount to sumthin' someday...maybe ~ ~ ~

Enjoyed it just as a straight read, particularly the pep/step verse - DKTOS & not a fan so I'll just presume it paces well.

Why I oughtta...
Sure back in ’05 I remember frolicking some. There was this girl named Bertha who as I recall possessed an ample bosom. One day I walked her home and pushed her into a haystack. She kicked me in the privates with her high-button shoes. I nearly soiled my long johns right then and there. See, woman weren’t allowed to touch men then. We were both glad that she didn’t wind up in a family way. I still kinda like woman’s shoes though...What was I sayin'

BTW...tomorrow's my Birthday...thanks for reminding me...

Sadly, happens to women too. My grandmother was pretty much not there he last two years. Then again, she was 95.

Security code: WW2. I don't suppose your father was involved in that.

thanks mckludge...sadly so...yep, my dad was a pilot in WW2

alvin & McKludge - Hmmm...my dad was in the Air Force during WW2. But he flew a desk in San Antonio...he was, however, the Armed Services Table Tennis Champ one of those years.

Sir Alvin, thanks for writing this tribute to older Gents! My Dad, ~JJ~ died hard, and he wasn't old either(exSmoker) . . . It's so difficult/sad to see an Old Bull go down . . .

I can see your point in your song, Alvin. My parents are in their 60's now. They still look younger, though. Anyway, I worry every time my parents would react, especially my mom. The "you gotta watch your pop" lines reminds me of my parents telling me and my bro to be responsible and to take care of them. If I happen to make cracks about my parents being old, my mom would not only have her pride hurt, but she would see it as disrespect from us. She'll make an excuse saying that me and my bro are the ones making her old! We also have to be their eyes, ears, and brains since they tend to forget sometimes. Great song! 555!!!

My Dad, Bill, was in the Army during WW2, and in his later years he got a tad curmudgeonly at times ... but through the haze of morphine at the hospice, on the last day of his Earthly life, he managed to give me the most beautiful smile I've ever seen. 555.

I have noticed some parallels between my father and both grandfathers in this parody and its comments. For one, my father got absolutely nuts about golf when he was in his early forties. He is 61 now, and he has yet to break 100 despite watching The Golf Channel constantly and hitting practice balls whenever possible, including at night and during inclement weather. For two, both of my grandfathers (who both died within 6 weeks of each other, one of Alzheimer's and one of heart disease, a common problem on my mom's side of the family) were WW2 veterans, and they both died at the age of 71. My maternal grandfather was the oldest to die in recent family history. This was an enjoyable parody, but I am not familiar with Tom Petty, yet I will vote 3s anyway.

About the golf thing with my dad in the above comment and its connection with this parody: He essentially lost his grip, as mentioned in stanza 7 of verse 1.
