"The Night The Lies Came Out On George O."

The Lyrics

Based on the true story of former Notre Dame head football coach George O'Leary, who admitted he fibbed on his resume and resigned after six days of coaching last December. Ironically, his previous stint was at Georgia Tech.
He was on his way up from Georgia Tech.
He held his resume and he thought "What the heck".
At Notre Dame he applied for a job.
For six days he was hired.

The AD came and he said, "Hello"
And he also said, "How's it goin', O?
Won't you sit down? I got some bad news.
No you haven't been fired."

"Now, I'm the AD they call Kevin White.
And I know that you feel really lucky tonight.
But NYU called to say you've never went to their place."

Well George got scared; and he saw red.
'Cos he knew Notre Dame was truly misled.
And to tell you the truth,
Is that he did it himself.

Chorus:
That's the night that the lies came out on George O.
That's the night that he fooled old Notre Dame.
Don't trust your soul to no backward Southern teacher,
'Cos the priest at the school will drag his dirty name.

Well O'Leary was nervous and he left the Dome.
He knew it would no longer be his home.
See George would have had many bucks; but he lost him some.

Well Georgie was afraid that his wife had left him.
But she told him that he must confess his sin.
"If the student body ever found out, be prepared to run."

He went off to the confessional box.
The priest said, "Purge, Son".
A voice low as an ox.
George told the man the whole ruse
And he started to shake.

The priest said,"The thing that you did was wrong.
And Notre Dame's not the place you'd belong.
No Catholic folk should ever deal with a big fake."

Well, ESPN was the first to have found.
Then the Chancellor put the hammer down.
He said, "Coach you'd better resign or you're gonna go through it."

Well, tears fell down as George said he'll step down.
And Kevin followed him with a giant frown.
And said, "I want to interview Ty*, and I've gotta get to him."

(Repeat chorus)

Well the Irish spat vitriole at po' boy George.
The only friend that he had was the Lord,
Who said that, "Mr. O'Leary, you will be just fine."
So the very next week George heeded His advice.
Now he's a Vikings assistant under head coach Tice.
See big George may be a liar, but he sure isn't dumb.

(Repeat chorus, then fade out)
* "Ty" is the current Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham, the former Stanford head coach.
