The Lyrics

This was actually written at 3 in the morning during an all-nighter study session that my friends and I held over the Internet. The PSATs are coming up and we all want National Merit Scholarships and 'tis our qualifying year. We get together via instant message every night and cram our brains out, in addition to before school, study hall, afternoon, and lunchtime sessions. The good news is that there's a sense of solidarity in such desperate mass cramming. The bad news--after it's over we'll go home, sleep for fourteen hours, and some of us won't recognize each other without our faces stuck in test prep books.
Juniors, well, we're all feeling down.
I said, juniors, get your scores off the ground.
I said, juniors, 'cause the time's comin' round
And we all feel really crappy.

Juniors, there's things we need to know.
I said, juniors, cause colleges say so.
We're all cramming, and we'll soon lose our minds
And we're not having a good time.

It's hell to cram for the PSAT.
It's hell to cram for the PSAT.

The math section's the part of it I least enjoy,
But the Verbal stuff plagues Heloise ...

It's hell to cram for the PSAT.
It's hell to cram for the PSAT.

Lack of sleep turns us mean, we study through our meals,
Panicked pressure is all we feel ...

Juniors, are you listening to me?
I said, juniors, my score just rose by three
I said, juniors, we can make real our dreams.
But we've got to know everything!

No one is in this by himself.
I said, juniors, take the books off the shelf,
And let's do this, kill this PSAT
Before it kills you and then me.

It's hell to cram for the PSAT.
It's hell to cram for the PSAT.

We can cram at my house, our computer is choice,
Though you'll have to excuse the noise...

It's hell to cram for the PSAT.
It's hell to cram for the PSAT.

Lack of sleep turns us mean, we study through our meals, Panicked pressure is all we feel...

Juniors, we're shaking in our shoes.
I said, juniors, we're all stressed, tired, and blue.
We feel no one cares that we are alive.
We think this whole test is so jive...

I wish someone'd come up to me,
With the answers, my life would be complete.
It's a test that's called the PSAT.
That is making us all worried.

It's hell to cram for the PSAT.
It's hell to cram for the PSAT.

It's the part of our life that we all least enjoy,
So let's kill this test, girls and boys!

PSAT
It's hell to cram for the PSAT
Juniors, juniors, yeah, we're all feeling down
Juniors, juniors, get your scores off the ground

PSAT
It's hell to cram for the PSAT
Juniors, juniors, my score just rose by three
Juniors, juniors, we're all going crazy
PSAT
You'll really hate the PSAT
No one, juniors, is in this by himself
Juniors, juniors, take the books off the shelf

PSAT
We have to take the PSAT
PSAT
Juniors, juniors, we're all singing the blues
PSAT
Juniors, juniors, what are we gonna do?
PSAT

Fantastic! Just fill in the little circles next to the fives....

As much as you hate the math section, 3x=15 should be easy enough to solve: thank goodness those days are ancient history for me. (Rating pacing on a "YMCA" parody is a little tricker than for most songs, since the *original* is badly paced in a few places too.)

The experience has even coined a new word....since we're all taking it this year for the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, this morning we were all gathering to commisserate and somebody tried to pronounce the acronym, "NMSQT," as a word, so now instead of cramming, we're all "nimsquitting." We all find this hilarious. Further proof that *anything* is funny when you're sleep-deprived enough. :-)

Giving acronyms amusing pronunciations is not *only* for sleep-depped people - it's always fun. Though I'd rather call it "nimsquat", personally. I never got that nervous about the PSAT myself; I guess I was just naturally good at it, plus I got exactly the same score on example PSATs both before and after my mom made me take an online practice course. I was so pissed off when I only got a 790 on the SAT verbal section, though, since I'd gotten an 80 on the PSAT verbal :-D.

Oh, and if you want a couple scary stories I got from Mudd upperclassmen about their experiences with insane levels of sleep-dep, just ask.

Oh, oops... I forgot to note that I gave you fives. Hey, look at that... the radio buttons are even very much like SAT bubble fields. *fills in the 5s*

What was even more scarily hilarious that on the practice test thing they handed out at school, four of the answer choices spelled out "D-E-A-D..." somebody, somewhere is trying to give us a sign....

I'm taking the PSAT this fall and I'm prepping for it! I'll pray for the outcome when I'm done.
