If Don Imus had spent the last 40 years doing what Al Sharpton's done the last 20 years, he'd still have a job. Al Sharpton wouldn't have lived long enough to do what Imus has done for 40 years, because someone who thinks like you do and is better armed would have stopped him.
This was hilariously funny. As another free speech proponent, Bill Maher, joked the other night when introducing Mr. Sharpton: "I appreciate your making time for us tonight . . . I know this is your busy season."

I think Imus was way out of line here and I have enjoyed much of his humor over the years. It's OK by me to poke fun at politicians and celebrities Those folks have chosen the limelight and therefor are fair game, but to pick on a group of college athletes and other unknowns is not appropriate.
Thanks all for the feedback. Michael, I am as liberal in my views as you are. To me this is all about (free) speech. Political correctness has a way of inhibiting free speech. What was (re)solved by the firing of I-Man? Did the punishment fit the crime? Have not Imus, Reverand Sharpton and Reverand Jackson all been guilty of misstatements? I guess that Senator Kerry and Bill Maher think like me too - not bad company, wouldn't you say?
MasonR - admittedly my point may not have been clear - I am not defending Imus, I'm defending the right of free speech even if I disagree with it. So, again, I thank you all for your comments. (The I-Man will return).

Mr. spot.paw, I commend you for standing up for free speech and for pointing out Reverend Sharpton's hypocrisy even though you are not a Don Imus fan. But, even though Mr. Imus is free to say silly stuff, he lost his sponsors, so the network had no choice but to remove him from programming. But, I agree that, like Marv Albert came back from his exile, Don Imus will eventually come back as well.
After reading Imus' obituary in the Washington Post I remembered that I had once written an Imus parody. He was the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - and he was a radio pioneer.
