The Lyrics

Understand, I'm a heterosexual male with a lovely wife, and I'm happy to be married. And I can't see denying another fellow American that right- even if it's 2 guys or 2 girls. Just think...if Bush succeeds in passing this law saying that this group of people can't get married to each other...what's to stop the next guy from changing something else about our lives? 'No marriages without State approval.' 'No mixed race marriages.' Scary thought, huh?
Maybe all the gays are astray
And faking all the time...
Maybe we're afraid that they're really people.
Maybe all the gays have a way
They'd like to live their lives
2 husbands or 2 wives
Maybe we're afraid to admit that they're only people.

Maybe it's a man
Maybe it's a lonely man
Who's fell in love with someone
It doesn't matter if someone's a man
Maybe it's a man
Or maybe it's a lonely woman
Who is finally happy
What does it matter if we understand?
Oooh...

Maybe you're a man
Maybe with a family
Who sees a big change coming
That you probably wouldn't understand
But baby, here's the plan
The rights to life and liberty
The right to live here happy!
Belongs to every woman, child and man
Oooooh...

Maybe all the gays and the way
They're acting all the time
Maybe they're afraid of the way we see them.
Maybe I'm amazed at the way
I had to write this song,
Denying their rights is wrong
Maybe they are gay, but they still deserve their freedom.

Maybe next they'll claim solemn rights to group arrrangements too... Maybe they'll want six or seven husbands... Maybe some will seek wedded bliss with Saint Bernards and cows... Make barnyard wedding vows... Maybe there's a line to be drawn but somehow doubt it.

Important clarification - I am "(applauding)" Syncronos's well-written, well-paced, and intelligent parody.

Don't worry, mac - a line will indeed be drawn by all of us Americans participating in the democratic process, debating, listening to each other respectfully, and then voting - and I predict the line will be drawn in a way that NEITHER side in the debate likes. Smile, people, come on, live and frickin' let live, will ya? Peace! :)

I don't strongly oppose gay marriage. It probably can't do much harm, and might even do some good if it puts a bit a a damper on unhealthful levels of promiscuity in the gay community. I do wonder however, where the live and let live credo will eventually take society.
Robert J. Pagliaro - April 08, 2004 - Report this comment
Sync - a fine job. Hey, up until recently, interracial marriages were not allowed. This Christian right's influence on society has got to be stopped. The argument that this opens the door for the marriage of man and beast is absurd. If you don't like the idea of gay marriages, then don't marry a member of the same sex. Otherwise, people are people - so live and let live. 555 bob

And hey, if you don't like the idea of polygamy then don't marry more than one person. (And by the way, I am not the person who scored this song 1s. It is well done, thought provoking and got three 5s from me.)

Syncronos, I scored this parody as 5's across-the-board in all three categories, that's why I said "(applauding)" in my first comment.

And I applaud you, mac - you've proven yourself to be a fair, intelligent, and thoughtful reader by evaluating this parody on its artistic and technical merits even though you personally hold to a different opinion regarding its subject matter.

Anytime you offer a hot topic opinion, someone is going to give you the ones. (But he left the guy that wrote the same line 600 times alone) I gave you 555 just to counteract. I shared this sentiment recently with "Kiss at the End of the Service"

Thanks, you guys. You too, Mac. I just find it ridiculous that Bush would even try to amend the constitution with this. Live and let live. I like that. And Mac...the credo will take the country where it's supposed to go, right or wrong. Remember, this is the land of the free, not the land of the free- EXCEPT for so and so...
Melhi - April 08, 2004 - Report this comment
Nicely put, Syncronos! (Btw, I high fived you, earlier, too.)
Robert J. Pagliaro - April 08, 2004 - Report this comment
Let's also keep in mind that in the 200-plus years of our Constitution, it has never, ever been amended to exclude people - only to include people.
Johnny D - April 08, 2004 - Report this comment
Robert J. Pagliaro, you are so correct. But, if by some sad twist of political and/or religiously-fanatical fate the Constitution is actually amended to exclude an entire segment of humanity from equal protection under the law simply because they are homosexual, then straights and gays who love each other as human beings and who cherish each other's civil freedom would have to band together in massive acts of civil disobedience across America to bring about the repeal of such an amendment...and I believe they would indeed be successful.
Robert J. Pagliaro - April 08, 2004 - Report this comment
And let's be honest, civil disobedience (at least until factions within resorted to violence) has helped to evolve our society during these past 200-plus years; and, of course, the American Revolution was such an act. Today's anti-gay discrimination is eerily similar to this country's past civil rights violations that, thankfully, we have made some progress in this area. bob P.S. There is a bill in front of the NY Legislature that would take the word "marriage" out of the NY Constitution and substitute "civil union" - probably won't pass, but the idea is not a bad one if it allows for equal protection for all Americans.
Robert J. Pagliaro - April 08, 2004 - Report this comment
And besides, shouldn't we amend the Constitution for important things like getting rid of the electoral college? My guess is that the current (s)elected president would never go for this one.
Syncronos - April 08, 2004 - Report this comment
Civil disobedience regarding gay civil rights. That would be weird...and kinda cool at the same time. Instead of sit-ins...we'd have GAY-ins. Everybody would be dressed to KILL! Forget marching on Capitol Hill...they'd march on San Francisco...no...seriously. They'll never get it passed. I don't think little George realizes how many gay people there actually are in this country- and how many STRAIGHT people support them. Hell, my brother-in-law is gay. Will I go to a gay club with him? No. Will I tell him HE can't go? No. That's the American way: I don't care what you do, as long as you do it over there.

Good one Sync! (and finally you do a parody of a song I KNOW!) ;-)
Jango - April 08, 2004 - Report this comment
It was a lovely testimony to freedom, so you got all 5s from me. Not so much for being "funny" but for being "right on"! Why should we be afraid of other peoples' committment choices? Thanks! I'll let my children read this one.
Rice Cube - April 08, 2004 - Report this comment
Frankly, this is a waste of my taxpayer money and if they want to get married, let them...less bureaucrap I have to deal with :-P

And seriously, this issue should NOT involve the federal Constitution...that's just stupid.
Syncronos - April 09, 2004 - Report this comment
Rice, who do you think you're kidding? You know damn well you don't pay no taxes! :-P
Killjoy - May 14, 2004 - Report this comment
Gov't shouldn't be involved in marriage at ALL. For ANYONE -- 'gay' or 'straight'. Child custody issues/inheritance/benefits can and should be handled completely separate from the issue of whomever a person chooses to spend their life 'commited' to. As if 'commitment' means anything anyway, since even as a legal 'contract' it can be broken. Such nonsense... Anyway, fine parody -- nice message of tolerance and deftly done. 5-5-5.
