The Lyrics

I see that the "Edmund Fitzgerald" rewriting trend has returned. This OS, written by Jon Anderson and Steve Howe of Yes, has a very different mood from Gordon Lightfoot's song, but still has some common elements, such as a lake and harsh weather.
She was the Edmund Fitz
Under the greatest* lake she sits
Until this very day
Ask the Chippewa about the lake, they
Call it Gitche Gumee

She carried iron ore
Like she had many times before
But now she's gone away
She was doomed while sailing through the storm, went
Under Gitche Gumee....

In and around the lake
Tempest comes out of the sky
And it rains down
Cook has told us waves are too rough to feed you
Hatch gives in, so it's been good to know ya, too
Twenty nine have lost their lives, they are
Gone into the blue

Not much that we can do
Her silhouette is lost from view
The violent atmosphere....
When the morning came the ship had sunk, she's
Under Gitchee Gumee....

In and around the lake
Tempest comes out of the sky
And it rains down
Cook has told us waves are too rough to feed you
Hatch gives in, so it's been good to know ya, too....oo oo oo
Twenty nine have lost their lives, they are
Gone into the blue

Aboard the drifting ship the crewmen searching
Can't see the land
Watching the pounding waves the sailor falls
No longer can stand
November's gales too soon have come as weather
Spins out of hand

No longer ride the waves, we'll end up buried
Under the sand
Don't want to lose the ship, but now we know this
Is our last stand
Confront our deeper fears, we'll be
Entombed here for million years

We'll lose the Edmund Fitz
The storm will tear us all to bits
There goes the Edmund Fitz
The bottom will be where she sits....

[slow]
In and around the lake
Tempest comes come out of the sky
It rains down
Twenty nine have lost their lives into the blue....

[organ and guitar instrumental, at original tempo]

She was the Edmund Fitz
Under the greatest lake she sits
Until this very day
Ask the Chippewa about the lake, they
Call it Gitche Gumee....yeah

In and around the lake
Tempest comes out of the sky
And it rains down
Cook has told us waves are too rough to feed you
Hatch gives in, so it's been good to know ya, too....ooo
Twenty nine have lost their lives, they are
Gone into the blue....

Da da da da down down down
Da da da da down down down
Da da da da down down down
Da da da da down down down
Da da da da down down down
Da da da da down down down
Da da da da down down down
Da da da da down down down
*Lake Superior is often called the world's largest lake, but this is true if you only include freshwater lakes, and measure by surface area. Lakes Baikal (in Russia) and Tanganyika (in Africa) are larger by volume. The Caspian Sea is larger than all of these, but salty. Superior is still, however, the largest (and thus "greatest") of the Great Lakes of North America.

Not familiar with the original but this one sure reads well as a poem. Glad to see another entrant in this ongoing saga.

A tempestuous take-off.

The cook and hatch couplet particularly stood out!

It never ceases to amaze me - all the interesting ways the Edmund Fitzgerald keeps getting resurrected..I may take the plunge soon (maybe regrettably)
