Before someone too lazy to use Google nitpicks on acronyms and flak history, Germans started in the Franco-Prussian War with first Anti-Aerial Krupp 37mm BAK (Ballonabwehrkanone or Ballongeschutz) for shooting down French recon balloons. Then in WW1, they had full AA artillery. Usually 75, 77, and 80mm guns. First Flakpanzer was an experimental A7V tank as platform for two AA guns! By WW2, Rommel turned the fearsome 88mm AA gun into a field gun as well. Then AA was turned over to missiles pioneered by Nazi Germany: Wasserfall, Enzian, Hs-117 Schmetterling. For decades it's been that way. But as US and Israel have worked on HELs (High Energy Lasers) as anti-missile defense, Germany under Rheinmetall AG has developed a twin laser system from 30-100Kw for AA defense as well as all armored vehicles. The system can take out drones, low flying aircraft, artillery, mortars, rockets, missiles, IEDs, and penetrate light armor at 1000m (20mm). Can be used against ground troops and installations too.

I figured flak as in flak jacket when I saw the title - which if I'd written a song with a title like that would have been about (the second round of) a heated argument with ones wife.

Perhaps the best "gap" AA gun is the Swedish Bofors 40mm. Used by both Allies & Axis in WW2 and postwar. I think some German ships still have them...
