The Lyrics

Funny I haven't yet done any Godzilla parodies. Okay, let's do one.
It only comes at night
Giant lizard, size of whale
Radiating with an orange glow
Mighty mutant monster
destroying cities and the towns
of Japan with nuclear rage

It levelled Tokyo, and now
it has run away somehow
it made comeback on the road again
It will swim towards the East
Western Coast is in threat, at least
It's the monster that is big in Japan!

Dai! - it is the Big in Japan -
Tonight!
ōkii! - monster Big in Japan -
Tonight!
Big in Japan!-
At sight...
Big in Japan... sō, the Pacific's so blue
Big in Japan
ōkii!
Terror spreads all over USA
It's Godzilla, monster Big in Japan
Ō - it's the Big in Japan!

Radiation afterglow
belching hot death ray
scorching towns and people just for the show
Run away now for your life
You should now go with your kids and wife
to escape the ugly scene!

It levelled Tokyo, and now
it has run away somehow
sō....
It will swim towards the East
Western Coast is in threat, at least
It's the monster that is big in Japan!

Dai! - it is the Big in Japan -
Tonight!
ōkii! - monster Big in Japan -
Tonight!
Big in Japan!-
At sight...
Big in Japan... sō, the Pacific's so blue
Big in Japan
ōkii!
Terror spreads all over USA
It's Godzilla, monster Big in Japan
Ō - it's the Big in Japan!

Gojira (gorilla-whale) was a symbol of nuclear war, something the Japanese people had some experience with. The people that wrecked Plastic Tokyo on screen no doubt experienced the destruction of the real city by US fire bombs. There was a lot of symbolism hidden in what at first glance looks like just a low-budget monster film.

Good one Susanna-555! I agree with Patrick on his comments about the symbolism but since Japan was Germany's ally, there is no doubt the Japanese would have nuked any US invasion force had they got their bomb Genzai Bakudan operational in time. They came close but Konan was overrun by Soviet troops and so the two bombs they were working on (with German uranium and components shipped via U-boat) were destroyed. There is an account of Japan testing a small nuke in the Pacific by remote launch and detonation on 8/12/45... but no solid proof. However, since the US Govt. has falsified and classified the German and Japanese A-bomb projects it seems now that both Axis nations were closer than official history lies about. Germany discovered its mistake in late '44 and rapidly tried to enrich uranium through both gaseous diffusion and EM seperation. They had programs for a large "Reisen" type bomb and a mini-nuke at 440 kg (880 lbs) to be carried by modified Bf 109K-4s, re-designated SO Bf 109s (Suicide 109s). The conversions were completed but the LW was turned back from a facility by SS- reason not specified. Only Kammler knew for sure how far they got and Goering testified during the trials that he personally prevented Hitler from obtaining a "molecular bomb" (his term for either an A or H-bomb). Germans were aware of nuclear energy for bombs, power generation for cities, submarines, and even aircraft! They also managed to construct two captured radiologicals as well as converted 5 V-2s at Leese to carry a radiological payload. Japan's secret work was in occupied Korea at Konan and they had enough material for 2 bombs by August 1945...

Patrick and Rob: Yes! I have seen many of the Godzilla films, and while many of them are cheaply produced, they do have a certain amount of philosophy and symbolism behind. As you mentioned, the connection to both firebombing and nukes is apparent.

It is said Godzilla itself is the symbol of United States in war: overtly powerful, dangerous and certainly destructive, but sometimes even beneficial when it protects the Earth from even worse monsters.

Nice to know you liked it :-) There are not too many Godzilla parodies here at Amiright, and this was my first.

Seems like Suzanna knows her subject. The song choice was perfect: Godzilla is really "big in Japan" - a humonguous monster - and the words "dai", "okii" and "o" in the chorus mean "big" or "large" in Japanese language! Quite an easter egg for Xmas!

I never really liked Godzilla that much when growing up in the '70s. I preferred "Ultraman" with the Baltan Seijin (Space Ninja), the Dada, and other weird creatures/monsters!

Good job Susan! And if you'd like to do a sort of 'smoosh' next you could do the lyrics of Big In Japan to Godzilla, by Blue Oyster Cult... :D
