The Lyrics

Some say Pete, he bet on baseball;
That shows a life of greed.
Some say Pete, he liked to hustle,
And show his blazing speed.
Some say Pete, he was a winner,
An all-star, yes, indeed.
I say Pete, he is a hero,
The kind Americans need.

When Ty Cobb's mark he was breaking,
His fans began the chants.
He was a star in the making,
That always took a chance.
Then his whole career was taken,
Giamatti would not give.
And the game, now that it's dyin',
It needs a spark to live.

Now the game is all baloney,
And the season is too long.
And the playoffs, they are only
For the wealthy and the strong,
Just remember in Milwaukee,
Was an All-Star Game that blows,
Yes, we need you more than ever.
In the Hall belongs Pete Rose.

If Pete Rose gets into the Baseball Hall of Fame before Gil Hodges does, as the old saying goes, it would be worse than a crime, it would be a blunder. The game is as good now as ever, and it needs a gambling, tax-cheating, wife-beating-AND-cheating, self-serving Pete Rose like boxing needs Mike Tyson: Not at all.
Bubba - March 12, 2003 - Report this comment
Well, geez, Michael, maybe we'd better remove that drinking, smoking, overweight, adulterer Babe Ruth from the Hall to make room for Gil, eh? NOT. He was one of the best ever to play the game, and nobody argues that point. Pete Rose certainly was also. Oh sure, the game is as good now as ever, as long as you happen to live in one of the top 10 media markets (or maybe Minneapolis/St. Paul, for now). Otherwise, the talent is diluted, salaries inflated (as well as egos), attendance is down, and the average team has a snowball's chance in hell of getting to the World Series.
