The Lyrics

I've had this idea for several months, but didn't have time to do anything with it. Finally just took the time. As with most song, more than one version exists from the same artist, so if you want to compare pacing to the specific version I parodied, I found a copy webbed at: http://www.mikyd.net/cd/
Now tell me buddy, have you heard, there's a party game
That stokes you nerds
Don't need no rhythm, Don't need no style
And there ain't no winners, gets you smilin'

Woo!

Put your right hand in, pull it out this way
In again and give it one big shake
Now the circle's groovin', don't break the stride
Get your body turnin', keep it tight and

Hokey Pokey
Looks like you got it, boy, you move mighty well
Hokey Pokey,
Go!
Hokey Pokey
Let's do the other hand,
Hokey Pokey
Shame you're a Dexter, cuz babe you're really gettin' down

Do your left foot now, keep a rockin' pace
Work it babe, then turn in place
Gettin' down and dirty, you shake your tail so right
You're movin' kind of sexy, lookin' fly, keep on

Hokey Pokey
Keep on a doin' this-a all night-a long
Hokey Pokey
Go!
Hokey Pokey
You got me sweatin', boy
Hokey Pokey
Shame you're a Dexter, cuz babe you're really gettin' down

Go! x 7

Got a mission, now and it ain't no joke
You put your whole self in 'n just go for broke
Now the game advances, let your whole self rock.
Dude your dancin's slammin', scorchin' hot!
You just

Hokey Pokey
Hoke Poke
Hokey Pokey
Hoke Poke
Hokey Pokey
Hoke Poke
Hokey Pokey
Stoked!
Do it!

Hokey Pokey
Stoked!
Hokey Pokey
Keep on,
Go!
Hokey Pokey
Stoked!
Hokey Pokey

Shame you're a Dexter, cuz babe you're really gettin' down

I can't believe I'm the first to vote on this. Hilarious! I love the way you completely neutered the original; that's what it's all about.
Rick D - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
I'm with Claude. (Although not in THAT way!)
Melhi - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks Claude and Rick. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Claude, I'm a little surprised too. That'll teach me to parody an obscure song that hit the charts, turned a relative unknown into a household name for awhile, made parents uncomfortable and languished in heavy rotation for the better part of a decade, eh? *grin* I thought the link to the original would help, but... oh well. It was fun to write and the two of you who did know it didn't seem to hate it, so it's all good. :) Thanks again!

too !@#$%^ funny....you know, the guy who wrote "the hokey pokey" died recently...i heard there was some trouble at the funeral home.... it all started when they tried to put his right leg in the coffin...
Melhi - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
LOL, Alvin! Thanks for the read n rate! (I'm starting to feel like the Sesame Street Count... "Three, three people know the original song... ah ha ha ha!" ;) )
Claude Prez - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
Of COURSE I know the original; I was right in the middle of puberty when it was a hit and I found it VERY INSTRUCTIVE.

A parody of The Stroke called The Poke - I thought I was heading into X-rated territory. Then when I got to the chorus and figured out you'd made it squeaky G-rated clean, I was simultaneously disappointed and delighted. Hilarious. Now I've gotta go dig out my old copy of "Don't Say No" - it just occurred to me that I still love the song "My Kinda Lover." (Does that make me a Dexter?)
Jack Wilson - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
LOL, loved it! Great job!
Melhi - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
Four, four people know the original song -- ah ha... aw, forget it. Thanks Spaff! Oh and if you have any kind of lover, (that has a pulse and other people can see, too, I mean) you're probably not a Dexter... and your high fiving me proves to me that you're neither a Dexter nor a Buster. ;) (Hmm... but now you have me wondering whether I'd get sued for doing "You may be a Dexter if..." jokes.)

Claude, you and I must be pretty close to the same age... that's what's confusing me about it getting so few votes -- I thought there were a lot of folks, here, in our age range and wasn't there some kind of law that everyone our age had to know this one like we knew the palms of our hands? >;)
Melhi - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks Jack! (Five, Five people know the original! :D Ok, that's the last time I'm doing "The Count" on this one, I promise.)
nally - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
I know the original song too; I was maybe less than a year old when it came out. I first heard it when I was in my teens though. Anyway, I thought it was pretty good. 5-5-5.
Serafina - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
I also know the original. I liked it; you did a good job.
Mari D - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
I don't know the original but enjoyed your parody anyway. And it sure beats "The Locomotion"!
Melhi - April 02, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks for the read n rate Nally & Serafina, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for checking it out even though you didn't know the original, Mari!
Billy Florio - April 03, 2004 - Report this comment
I was not expecting this song to be about what it is...great job.....and this is by no means an obscure song

kozar - May 04, 2004 - Report this comment
Hey, this one was good. By the way, I didn't know there was more than one version of the original.
Melhi - May 04, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks Kozar! I hear a shorter version on the radio, every once in awhile and I wasn't sure how well known that shorter version might be.
Adagio - May 10, 2004 - Report this comment

I think you just beat out (or poked out) Jim Breuer's AC/DC version of Hokey Pokey for me. Long live the queen of Hokey Pokeyin'.
Melhi - May 27, 2004 - Report this comment
I went and got a copy off the jimbreuer.com website because I hadn't heard it -- funny stuff and WOW, thanks for the great compliment, 2nz!!

SOTM - Melhi, DKTOS, but a good read. I tried that link but I got an error message.
Melhi - May 31, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks Paul. Did you use the link at the top of this page or the link I included with my SOTM entry? I included a different one with the entry because the one at the top of this page had been taken down, already. I'm not having any trouble with the url I included with my entry. I prefer to send traffic to the page hosting the files, but maybe it'd work better for you to just punch in the direct link to the file, itself:
http://www.zabriskie-point.ru/mp3/reallyrockvol2/5%20The%20Stroke.mp3
Anyways, thanks for trying and I appreciate that you gave me a read-through, anyway. :)

Melhi - HEY! what happened! I DID see your song link over on the contest voting string page after I made the other remark and came right back over here to write another one and vote (5-5-5). It's not there! Anyway, I got to hear it a couple minutes after I wrote the 1st "DKTOS" comment and you did an excellent job. I'm going to check back after I submit this to make sure my vote got recorded. I was just checking today's comments and I saw my first and did not see my second so I came right over here.
Paul Robinson - May 31, 2004 - Report this comment
OK - my vote didn't get recorded then, either. It has been now. Hmmm...I've got to wait now to avoid being "twitted-out" here. Maybe I'll Twiddle my thumbs for a few minutes...
Melhi - May 31, 2004 - Report this comment
Paul -- wow, thanks for going to all that bother! Glad the link finally worked OK for you and I'm sorry this one turned out to be such a pain in the ascii for you. (PS. If we had some on-twit-hold music, it would sure help pass the time.)
Paul Robinson - June 01, 2004 - Report this comment
Melhi, Not a problem at all. If the writer goes through all the trouble of posting the link for contest reader's I think they owe it to the writer to give it a listen if they can possibly & practically do so. If you don't have sound or it's not working that's a different story.
Blue Ant - May 16, 2005 - Report this comment
Hey...this one's good. ;) But um...your link at the top doesn't work anymore (I guess it did at one time?).
Melhi - May 16, 2005 - Report this comment
Thanks Blue Ant! Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, the link used to work... that's the trouble with providing links, the content on the other end often disappears pretty quick. :(
lessersivad - June 26, 2006 - Report this comment
Now THAT'S funny!!! Great job!!
Porkbeard - July 19, 2006 - Report this comment
I thought that this song was going to be dirty at first, but when I saw that it was about the Hokey Pokey, I burst out laughing. Awesome job!
