The Lyrics

I spent the previous week in San Diego, which is inundated every July by residents from Arizona (called Zonies by the natives) who are seeking to escape the brutal July heat of places like Phoenix. Seeing as how I was actually born in Phoenix, Arizona, I decided to counter the stereotype of "The Zonie" with my own soaring anthem of sniveling victimization.
Born down in a sauna town
My tootsies got singed before they touched the ground
You pant like a dog overheated too much
So you spend your July just a sheltering up

Born in the Zonieland, I was
Born in the Zonieland, I was
Born in the Zonieland
Born in the Zonieland

Got to hatch a little "vacay" plan
So I bundled kiddies in a van
Set a course for a coastal land
Gonna mess with the Cali man

Born in the Zonieland, I was
Born in the Zonieland, I was
Born in the Zonieland, I was
Born in the Zonieland
Born in the Zonieland

Spent whole day by the Pacific Sea
Surfer man said, "Dude, you better use some screen"
Crying out, "How'd I burn so bad?"
He said, "Dude, don't you see that sand, Brah"

Got a brother up in Mission Bay
Says to me, "Bro, I'm gonna stay"
We're all hot; he's OK
He got a job he loves in a cafe
I got picture of him soaking rays

Gone are the rhythms of the great Pacific Sea
Dogged by the misery of the mid-August heat
Ten more weeks sweating like a toad*
Can't hide from sun, ain't got nowhere to go

Born in the Zonieland, I was
Born in the Zonieland
Born in the Zonieland
I'm a pit stained daddy in the Zonieland
Born in the Zonieland
Born in the Zonieland
Born in the Zonieland
I'm a flop sweating Daddy in the Zonieland

*One of the worst things about Phoenix summer heat is that you don't get relief until October. In Phoenix, the hottest months are July, August and September. And June's not too hospitable either.

5's for this hot little ditty

The surfer exchange was a standout in this ("It's sand!"). A fun read.

That "surfer man said" routine popped up at almost the last moment, Warren. I was just about to hit "Send" with something else ... I didn't get burned but one of my kids got a little sunburnt. And I actually did tell him about the effect of white sand reflecting UV rays upward, causing a double whammy of UV rays
