The Lyrics

The first step in creating a knockout parody...picking a good Original Song. Not easy, is it?
I checked today's new posts
And I'm a-mazed
Eleven Britney Spears rewrites
And seven Yesterdays
A song we all know
That's not been overdone
It's far harder to find
Than a really catchy tune by Celine Dion

That Boho Rhapsody
I might come to despise
Sick of BoiSk8ers
And those Amer-ican Pie-eye-ies

I'm looking at a list of names
Songs new, old, loud and mellow
All too short, obscure or lame
(Then there's Coldplay's "Yellow")
Well, I've tried to be diff'rent
It's a stressful quest
So I might as well just
Rehash "Be Our Guest"

A "Supercal" I see
What a freakin' surprise!
Hotel Calfornias
And those Amer-ican Pie-eye-ies

Please stop the Lavigne-ing
No more "Complicated", OK?
If you let "Let It Be" be,
You'd sure make my day
Who's doing Finnish punk-pop,
Or Japanese trad jazz?
I wanna think more creatively, but
I'm scared of DKTOS

If I play The Major-General,
Will you play Stacey's Mom?
I can't do rap or dance
So I'll stick to Elton John
(I) don't smell like Teen Spirit
I don't care 'bout your Favourite Things
But in the wee wee hours
I've considered McCartney's Wings..(eek!)

I'm no Piano Man
I'm simply a dumb Parody Guy
Who's been avoiding
That ol' Amer-ican Pie-eye-ie

Tonight I sold my soul
I'm lost in a dark parody hole
Staring at a blank white sheet (gulp..)
"A long, long time ago"

I know only about 50 songs; that's why I keep doing them over and over. . . . 5s

Only 12 days in, and we've already got the parody of the year. (The fact that the original is my favorite Bruce song is beside the point.) I love parodies about parody-writing, and this one is a gem. But I gotta confess: When I saw the title "More American Pies," I was thinking about the movies. After all, there was this one time, when Spaff, Johnny D, Arwen and I were at band camp...

You've hit the nail on the head with this one, Kristof--there are so many relatively obscure songs I'd love to spoof...songs by Nick Lowe, Marshall Crenshaw, the Rubinoos, Dave Edmunds, and of course who can forget Venus Flytrap (who???)...the list goes on and on. But the few times I've tried posting parodies of lesser-known songs, I get no response. So I too stick close to top-40 hits from the 60s through 80s, since that's what I know and more people are familiar with them.

Inspired by the Top 50 list on inthe00s, Kristof? ;-) Great stuff here and a perfect lead up to American Pie should you choose to do it. While I'm not opposed to seeing any of the songs you mentioned parodied again, the Major-General needs a serious vacation from all of us.

Good parody, Kristof. Seems like whatever you parody comes out good. 5's
