The Lyrics

Got out of town on a truck
Goin' to southern farmlands
Stealing a ride
Before the humans catch me

I was runnin' far away
From the louts I'd
Seen such beatings done
To a puppy like me

Sniff the wind on this highway
I smell the mesas
Over eighty feet higher than the land
Nightly fading 'way.

In a noisy car in Avalon
I tried to warn you
Then I fled at night and you realized
Why twice I ran away

(Think about) Think about how many times
I was beaten
Humans abusing me
Hear their voices bleatin'
What bruises they brought to me
They won't be repeatin'

I will run around the world
Lookin' for that human-girl
Who loves us dogs for sure
Gotta know she will
Gotta know she will

When you leave your Supper Dish
For the first time
You understand now
Why you came this way

'Cause abuse you might be runnin' from
Seems so small
But it's as big as the bruises
The humans gave to you today

I'm through wailing out of sorrow
My screams are a dyin'
Though there still is a collar tied to me
Tied with a silver chain

I'm on a truck
And far away from the cryin'
I'm so glad that I have left
Bye-bye abuse and pain

(Think about) Think about how many times
I was beaten
Humans abusing me
Hear their voices bleatin'
What bruises they brought to me
They won't be repeatin'

I will run around the world
Lookin' for that human-girl
Who loves us dogs for sure
Gotta know she will
Gotta know she will

So escape is what I tried
Now I've rested
The truck sailed right into Vail
It's where the humans go skiing too

I will survive - be adopted
Some human fine
Will come along
Give me a home and some loving too

And a Supper Dish

Very cute!

Very cute Johnny. I was working on this one, but couldn't quite get it. I thought you used too many original lines though. You and I are really covering the dog terrain.

Thank you, Leah and Rick.

Rick - one aspect of my personal parody-writing style is to try to work in lines from the original song when they work perfectly with the parody's theme - and I am fully aware that every parody reader, such as yourself, has a different tolerance-level for how many original lines they are willing to tolerate in a parody

I could have rewritten more of the original lines, but they just worked so perfectly with my doggie-on-the-run theme that I decided to keep them in.

Works for me...I'm sorry it didn't work for you.

Rick - the following are the ONLY lines I kept from the original song, and I intentionally kept these lines in because they flowed and worked so beautifully with my runaway-doggie-theme:

"Think about how many times"

"For the first time"..."You understand now"..."Why you came this way"

"Tied with a silver chain"

"Will come along"

That is it, my friend - there is not even one other line from the original song in my parody.

Gee Johnnie, You know I love you, don't be so defensive. I probably should have said "original words", not lines. ("Got out of town.., Goin' to southern....around the world, etc). There's nothing wrong with that. I love keeping an original line and making it twist by context. It's just that I've sung this with people SO many times that I couldn't get away from the original enough to fully enjoy the parody. Also it was just a bit sad, and you're capable of hilarious. IT'S JUST ME, BUDDY. And I'm an opinionated SOB. Besides, when people get nit-picky with me, it just irks me enough to do better. I suppose I should be honored that a small beef from me means something to you. You are in my top ten, you know.
Johnny D - November 22, 2003 - Report this comment
Rick - I genuinely like opinionated SOB's like you because you tell it like it freakin' is, with no bullsh*t - and I value brutally frank honesty from the people in my life - even the people I only know through words on a computer screen. I understand much better now why you experienced this parody the way you did - if I had done this song many, many times, I would be hyper-alert to each and every original word, too. That's only natural. And yes, it is a bit sad, I admit - I love to write hilariously funny parodies, but as my author-bio says, I sometimes feel like writing something a bit more serious or melancholy....that's just the way I am. I guess I occasionally process some of my personal suffering through my art, like any artist would. You are right - a small criticism from you means a lot to me because I have seen the consistently high quality of your own art, and so I value your opinion. And thanks - you are in my top ten as well, dude.

Good job, Johnny. You also rate high on my list. Funny thing 'bout Rick : He's easily one of the most musically talented people I know - and we've been friends over 25 years. He's a "needler", but he only critiques those whose work he repects. There have been periods where we would barely speak to each other - so he must have REALLY respected me!

Johnny D - Nice job. I, too, was considering So.Cross, but not really close to doing it yet. CSN songs are fun to do because (a) they are good songs and (b) they are often fairly challenging, parts of them seem easy but putting the whole song together sometimes leaves you coming up short somewhere. Thanks for the vote on "Bong Time Coming". Hey, I posted a "pet" song too last night, but it looks like no one knows the original "Bitter Green" by Gordon Lightfoot (which I thought might happen). Had fun writing it anyway.

Both David And Johnnie should be grateful that my "needling" has diminished with age. Some of us find God and others just quit drinking,(I'm the latter) so I try to be a bit more supportive. And Paul, I have two CSN songs on for tomorrow, thinking of you and Johnnie. I like how both the comraderie and competition fires me up to work harder on these. Mari is getting the bug also.

Thanks David, and thanks, Paul. I look forward to each of your new posts, too.

Rick - "needling" is OK, as long as it makes a good, constructive point! Please keep that intelligent and honest criticism coming - thanks.
