The Lyrics

HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen was a Netherlands minesweeper ordered to withdraw from Java after the Japanese attacks. The crew came up with a brilliant idea to camouflage the ship to look like an island by making an artificial canopy and extend foliage over the sides. The hull was also painted to look like rocks and cliffs. The ship remained anchored during the day near land and only moved at night. Japanese recon and fighters never discovered the ruse and the vessel made it to WA in March 1942. From RNN to RAN back to RNN, refitted several times and used for different purposes: minesweeper, ASW, and cargo transport. The ship lasted from 1936-1963.
Minesweeper near Java ordered away
As more Japanese forces were on their way

The ship was soon to be converted
Tropical foliage not just for show
Disguise as island was all fiction
Crazy cammo
Crazy cammo

[Chorus:]
Combat Combat Combat Combat Combat Chameleon
Crazy cammo
Crazy cammo
Anchored in daylight and it was never seen
The ship beneath
The ship beneath

Sailed at night only to make headway
Slow progress but moved forward everyday

It was such an odd depiction
Anything, anytime could have gone wrong
But the trick was really clever
She moved along
She moved along

[Chorus]

Camouflage for ship survival
Had to hide from her Jap rivals
Camouflage for ship survival
Had to hide from her Jap rivals

The ship was soon to be converted
Tropical foliage not just for show
Disguise as island was all fiction
Crazy cammo
Crazy cammo

[Chorus 3x]

Another fascinating tale from WWII. Human ingenuity never fails to amaze me.

Germans built wooden fake airfields and when finished the RAF would drop fake wooden bombs on them with the word BOOM! painted on.

Like the fake bombs on the dummy airfields. Wonderful British humour.
