Waza-ari ... "Incomplete technique" A successful throw that is not quite sufficient for "Ippon" (Judo equivalent of TKO which ends match) but merits consideration. If match ends and you have a waza-ari and your opponent doesn't, you win ...... Waza ari awaseta Ippon -- "Wazari leading to Ippon". A second waza-ari in a match leads to winning by Ippon

Tatami -- Mats made from tightly woven straw. Apparently Jigoro grew increasingly concerned that his students were being insufficiently brutalized by being thrown onto bare ground, so he devised this ingenious solution .... And yes, that was a bit of sarcasm
