The Lyrics

Somebody on my road
Somebody on my street

I hear it in the air
Their mower's shout 'n screech

My head aches
I can't sleep

The sun rose dawning slow
I'm lyin' in my house
And I know they're at home

'Cause I can hear them
Their Honda whinin' in the sun
They got their power tools and their compressor on, baby

And I can tell you
My headache pain will still be strong
Until the noise of summer has gone

I never will forget those nights
I wish that it was all a dream
My neighbor's Black-And-Decker crazy
My neighbor always makes me scream

Now I don't understand
My neighbor's chainsaw love
That rope, he's gonna yank it back
He's gonna show you what I'm 'fraid of

I can see him
His chainsaw whinin' in the sun
I see him walkin' real slow and he's smilin' at everyone

I can tell you
His fetish for tools will be strong
Power-tool noise all summer's his song

Out in his yard today
I saw that dickhead switch on
His sand-blasting tool
A little voice inside my head said,
Die you fool, you psychotic tool-fool

I thought I knew what peace was
What did I know?

Those days aren't gone forever
And I won't let them go 'cause

I've been plannin'
To ground the voltage of that scum
When he's not lookin' I'll de-insulate that cord, baby

And I can tell
Rubber gloves aren't used by him, he's dumb
After I e-lec-tro-cute that bum

I can smell him
His sparking head smokes in the sun
With one hundred twenty volts of revenge in him, baby

Silence descends
I won't be dialing nine-one-one
Now that the noise of summer has gone

Boy, you hit the jackhammer on the head. Try to record like I do with the idiots and their noisiest toys.
Ashkicksass - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
LOL, Johnny. My dad is one of those. He has every tool known to man. The louder the better, bless him.
John Barry - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
For me, it's morons with untrained mutts. Give me a leafblower any day.

I agree, Johnny

Nice job! I completely understand where you come from with this one!

Thanks very much, Rick, Ashkicksass, JB, and Royce. My wife suggested this topic to me for a parody of "The Boys Of Summer". Before we bought a house, we rented the top half of a two-family house in Newton, Massachusetts, and we had a neighbor on our street who loved to fire-up his power-tool collection.

Thank you, Bob O'Mara!

I got a headache just reading it and thinking of the noisy stuff around here! 5's
2Eagle - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
A good one. In my neighborhood it is all night parties. Besides that I live near a public school and in the fall it is SUV hell all day. Why don't you write about that?
alvin rhodes - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
funny one...5s...where i live there is no grass....uh...no lawns, but they are building condos next door and there's a freeway across the street, so its still pretty noisy
Johnny D - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
Thank you Leo Jay, Adagio, 2Eagle, and Alvin.

2Eagle, since you are the one living amidst the all-night parties and the SUVs, I think you, yourself, are best qualified to write a parody about your cacophonous situation --- and I would love to read it when you post it!

Alvin, I think you have a parody idea in there amongst the condos being built next door and the freeway across the street... condos... being.... built... door... freeway... street.... all tied together with the theme of obnoxious noise.... I think you could do something pretty cool with that!
Cookie-man - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
Psychotic tool-fool. LMAO! That was HILARIOUS Johnny! I can totally relate. I live in an apartment and the little old man down the street that mows our lawn (A.K.A. That @$$HOLE!) fires up the mower at 7:00 almost every Saturday. I am hoping one of these days I will go out and find him lying dead on the lawn.............:)

I'll take a noisy summer over a freezing winter anyday! Plus, snowblowers are loud, too!!! 5s, JD!
Johnny D - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks, Cookie-man & Arwen! Arwen, I agree --- I'll take summer over winter any day!

Thanks, mac! Lee, I'm not crazy about Barney, either!

Sounds like you need to invest in 5 sets of earplugs...
Guy - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
DKTOS but a nice read just the same. We have noise here all year round since it never gets much below 50 degrees in January. We just don't hear it much in the summer because,
1 - It's too hot to be outside working on stuff and
2 - Everything is shut down tight and the AC is on so the outside noise stays outside.

Have you checked your email lately?
Peregrin - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
Good one JD. That's killed another work in progress ha ha! And it's all Merry's fault for dragging the chain!
Johnny D - August 18, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks everybody!

Merry: I actually do keep a pair of earplugs on my nightstand!

Guy: I've heard that about southern summers, sounds like living on another planet where you go from controlled-environment to controlled-environment. And thanks for the little item in my Yahoo email --- I enjoyed it immensely --- it had me laughing out loud for real! Thanks!

Pippin: Wow, really? We had a confluence of cosmic silliness in the Amiright Parody Coincidence Nexus? Far out!! ;-D

(SB) In my neighborhood it used to be the sounds of construction, and these days it's the sound of barking dogs...as Gilda Radner said, "it's always something". Excellent job here... when I saw your phrase "chainsaw love" I thought of "Radar Love" -- maybe a sequel?
Agrimorfee - June 10, 2006 - Report this comment
(Summertime) I hate Don Henley, but I loved this.
Red Ant - June 14, 2006 - Report this comment
Heh heh, if you think sandblasters are loud from across the street, try standing next to one! I have to admit this guy you want dead was me at one point, though I didn't fire my tools (or jet skis, or motocross bikes) up just for the hell of it, or at inappropriate hours. Good stuff here; ironically, I'm now the one who is bothered by noise to no end, and sleep with earplugs, too.

(Summertime) For once I didn't have to find the OS after I realized that DJ Sammy and The Ataris have covered this song. Either way, this was funny. I also hate noise pollution, except for me it comes from my neighbours occasional kareoke party, and the CANNOT SING!!!

(SB) yup, them psychotic black-and-decker tool-fools drive me nuts too JD - amazing how well the original lines fit into this one - better than the OS imho

(ABC3N) love it - of all the syllable-matched close-to-the-OS-parodies you've done JD, this would be the s-m c-t-t-O-est - you can actually hear the song playing as you read it - oh, and thankyou God for not making JD (and his de-insulating schemes) my neighbour
