The Lyrics

The tenacity and futility of the Messerschmitt Me-262 in 1945...
On stand-by near a hangar in broad daylight
Flak crews are ready with everything that they’ve got
Radar is scanning skyward
Observers watching the clouds
“Incoming bombers”!!! Flak gunners fire the first shots!!!

Here comes the bomber stream
Blackbirds start the Jumos for use
Experten climbin’ aboard- let ‘em loose
Taxi on the runway slowly building up the thrust
Climbing into the sky to put four MKs to use!

A battery of R4M rockets under each wing for hitting home
So much better for a slaughter
It’s going to be a tough fight
Guns ablaze on the Adler’s nose, barrage rocket talons hitting hard
300:1 unfair fight (yet)
2-6-2 is Nazi might

Striking thunder waiting for the escorts to show
They appear, hit the throttles, no time for a roll
The Stang and Spits struggle but they’re far too slow!
And pure speed is all it ever needs
Straight-line acceleration-Go!
Movin’! Movin!

Allied escorts performing poorly
If one-on-one no way they could last
It’s the numbers that drive Goering crazy
Few machines, but the Swallow’s fast!

Germany’s bein’ destroyed slowly
On the ground and with air armada attacks
It’s the numbers that drive Goering crazy
Few machines, but the Swallow’s fast!
A lot are sittin’ ‘cause there’s not much gas!

Strikin’ the stragglers when given the room
Waist gunner .50s they tend to be hell
Mighty Fortresses and Libs won’t give up a fight
Even with fast hostile jets on their tail
Sticks of bombs drop down below- it’s a slaughter
Churning up the rubble once again
Swallows get some kills, planes plunge to the earth
Racking up their scores ‘til bitter end

Luftwaffe waiting for miracle weapons- such thinking is for fools
Production is suspended
SS moving underground
Looking at the ruined cities there can be no doubt
Germany has lost the fight
End of the thousand year Reich…

Striking thunder waiting for the escorts to show
They appear, hit the throttles, no time for a roll
The Stang and Spits struggle but they’re far too slow!
And pure speed is all it ever needs
Straight-line acceleration-Go!
Movin’! Movin!

Allied escorts performing poorly
If one-on-one no way they could last
It’s the numbers that drive Goering crazy
Few machines, but the Swallow’s fast!

Germany’s bein’ destroyed slowly
On the ground and with air armada attacks
It’s the numbers that drive Goering crazy
Few machines, but the Swallow’s fast!
A lot are sittin’ ‘cause there’s not much gas!

Great need
Great need
Great need
Drive them away

Great need
Great need
Great need
Drive them away

...(Mein Gott- the Swallow’s fast)...
Note: From 1984's "Streets of Fire" the real artist is Fire Inc. I chose Diane Lane's character band for recognition.

"Streets of Fire" is one of my favorite movies. "Nowhere Fast" is just one of several great songs, leading up to the grand finale "Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young". If the British had switched from their policy of bombing cities to precision attacks on fuel production, the Luftwaffe might have been finished off much sooner.

The RAF couldn't tackle daylight raids and so took on the night bombing offensive. The USAAF tried and set the Germans back but Speer got synthetics back up and the Rumanians defended their oil fields too. All agree that the Allies should have hit the German power grid instead.
