The Lyrics

Grammar's been done over it's so austere,
Rappers make up words you can't concieve,
They ramble dialect like some yenta,
They don't use proper grammar, I believe.

Linking hello to whaddup dog,
Or out egging on some ho,
Not understanding this dictation,
And why every sentence punctuates with yo?

Never found English that boring,
Useful when I want to yack.
Now the language is so horrid,
Try eliminating slang words when you quack.

Grammar's now beginning to sound quite queer,
Listenin' to hip hop makes me grieve.
It's the culture we call 'mericana,
This grammar's just not somethin' I perceive.

Won't go with the crowd on grammar,
It's no wonder kids can't spell.
Pack the language up in moth balls,
What I hear just makes me wanna scream and yell.

Can't go ruleless with this grammar,
Hear some home boy make a crack.
Why the king's English they plunder,
Tell me why they make the language sound so whack?

Grammar's been done over it's so austere,
Rappers make up words you can't concieve,
They ramble dialect like some yenta,
They don't use proper grammar, I believe.

Surf the remote on the cable,
MTV fifty cent gig.
Why do these rappers dismantle,
All the words to death but still they make it big.

These guys have a gift for blabber,
Wish we could turn off their valve.
Their babbling sounds like nonsense,
So I'll switch off MTV and go to twelve.

Grammar's now beginning to sound quite queer,
Listenin' to hip hop makes me grieve.
It's the culture we call 'mericana,
This grammar's just not somethin' I perceive.

Grammar's been done over it's so austere,
Rappers make up words you can't concieve,
They ramble dialect like some yenta,
They don't use proper grammar, I believe.

If I had my copy of The Language Instinct with me (home for the holidays and all) I would quote large gobs of text from it on this subject. Suffice it to say, Black English Vernacular (BEV for short) is just as much of a language. True, it doesn't follow all the rules of English grammar, that being what makes it a dialect, but to quote a passage from The Language Instinct that I happen to have had written down, "It is even a bit misleading to call Standard English a "language" and these variations "dialects," as if there were some meaningful difference between them. The best definition comes from the linguist Max Weinreich: a language is a dialect with an army and a navy." (16) Also, I don't really like the use of 'austere' for 'reindeer,' seeing that the first has the stress on the second syllable and the second has the stress on the first. Hehe... you write a linguistic parody, I will either love it or hate it, and you got the latter this time ;-).
