The Lyrics

The original song seems to speak of somewhere on the western front of WW1, perhaps a pointless slaughter-land like Verdun or the Somme. Since the original song has such an emotional aspect - hearing it is as if you're in the trenches enduring shellfire, hearing a whistle, the screamed commands of 'OVER the TOP' into a barage of shrapnel (the real stuff that comes in a regular shell to spray round balls; truly bad news if one goes off to your front).... Well, in a fantasy realm, what would be a suitable subject - one that has a remotely 'amusing' aspect? Since trolls aren't real, and history records too many 'unknown soldiers' blown to shreds on battlefields, I guess this might work. Sorry it's still serious - as a mobile *mountain* is a formidable enemy.
Do you smell trolls?

Run up the mountainside,
Now no fun, absent sun, a foggy noonday,
Feel his bite, coming appetite, NO! Where is my pay?
Atop a hill, feel the thrill? Why? It's time to go.
Aching legs, splitting side,
Still alive, coming hard through bombs filled w' flame,
Each other blame, dodge the shame, it never had a name.

Do you smell trolls?
The sun falls.
Do you smell trolls?

Look in its eyes and still your screaming cries,
Say your final prayers,
A mountain's door, thundered more, a reddened sky!
The sundered keep, your final sleep, now to die!
Blinded eyes, shattered head, nothing to see
In your death be not proud!
A fool's brigade, a reddened glade, a bleeding sea,
Skin of stone dyed with blood, all that yet live now flee.

Do you smell trolls?
Giant of stone.
Do you smell trolls?
Ugh, Trolls. Only in the last few days did I see one on my DVD player. Before that, I had to imagine them after reading, so the song does fit.

DKTOS, so can't really "get" this (don't care for Metallica) -- was expecting a send-up of Internet trolls (great follow-up idea!), but FWIW, the title was the title of a novel by Ernest Hemingway about the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39, and taken from a line in a philosophical work by John Donne in 1624, "Devotions upon Emergent Occasions".

Glad to see modern bands are paying homage to the classics! :-)
