The Lyrics

This is starting to be a habit. I can't hear any song anymore without thinking of a shipwreck. A lot of the new songs "are" shipwrecks, even if they don't mention the sea.
Ed Fitzgerald, come on board
We're gonna sail 'til we reach that other shore
Carrying ore
What is in store?
Got us a date with some stormy weather
Cloudy skies at twilight came
Deck starts to tilt and the winds are blowing strong
Sailing along
Things start going wrong
Don't need to look far to know that we're in trouble deep

Edmund went the extra mile
She was the ship that broke the records
Captain had that special style
Ed Fitzgerald, you're a massive vessel
Rogue wave grabbed you and began to wrestle
The hatches are flooding
Our ship is going down!

S.O.S.
S.O.S.
S.O.S., somebody!

Cracklin' lightning streaks through the sky
Hurricane winds by the hour, such a fright
May last all night
Our end is in sight
Looks like we're doomed, really ain't no question now

Gonna lose the Edmund Fitz
Hatches awash, the ship is sinking
Radar screen is on the fritz
Edmund Fitzgerald, you're a storm-tossed freighter
Hole in the hull like a lunar crater
Too late for the life boats
The ship is going down

Save us now
Save us now
Save us now, Sweet Jesus!

Ed Fitzgerald fifteen more miles
If we had made Whitefish Bay, been all right
Safe through the night
A refuge in sight
Sank in flash, folks still asking questions, how?

Patrick, have you given any thought to writing a parody about some of the German ships??? Bismarck, Tirpitz, Graf Zeppelin... maybe even the horrible MS Wilhelm Gustloff disaster??? http://www.feldgrau.com/wilhelmg5.jpg

Your song was definitely not a shipwreck. First Edmund Fitzgerald song I can remember that's not a parody of the song itself

Jeff, check over the last two weeks, I've had a new Fitzgerald of sorts every day. Michael Pacholek inspired me to write them with a couple Fitz's of his own. Rob, the story of the Gustloff is largely unknown. So are those of the Cap Arcona (3000+ dead) and the Steuben (4000+), even less known than Gustloff. Stories are always floating around in my mind. Some day this one may emerge. These are worth telling. Would make for some frightening films, but, there are no supernatural robots, so Hollywood will never get interested.

The Germans have done at least 2 movies (one in the 2000s) and a two-part tv special along with independent documentaries. I wish Hollywood WOULD make this movie on the MS Wilhelm Gustloff but when Disney is making a new Lone Ranger movie with Johnny Depp (as Tonto) for $250 million... I don't think anytime soon!!!

Someone told me that Disney canned the Lone Ranger after "Cowboys and Aliens" flopped at the box office. I remember when the last remake of the Lone Ranger blew any chance of success by forcing Clayton Moore to take off his mask in public. That antagonized a lot of fans. Though it did land Moore an acting gig in a sunglasses commercial. Are the German movies available on US compatible DVD?

Patrick - Congrats! Keep going...you are not only doing a great job, but you are also p*ssing off the "artistry" who would run you off the site as they have run me off. :)

Disney has only temporarily shelved the "Lone Ranger" movie b/c of rising costs- the budget was once just $100 million and has climbed to $250 mil!!! The 1980 "Lone Ranger" was horrible, I agree. As for the German movies, they are available for Region 2 PAL DVDs- you can play them in the US with a Region 0 player. I have one from Toshiba, so my Euro-collection is decent...

I'll have to enquire at a better class electronics store about getting a multi-region DVD player. There are a lot of good movies out there that can't be found in US sources. OMR, who is "running" you off? No one but Chucky G can run anyone off the site.

Maybe that's why the ship sank: The pilot had too much "poor man's lady."

I remember hearing a song about the Exxon Valdez. It was said that the captain "spilled 10 million gallons from a one pint bottle".
