The Lyrics

The following is actually misleading because I had better friends and some (responsibly) friendly teachers when "Mine Field" was released on _On Fire!_. It's easy for military veterans with PTSD to say that emotional stress is nothing compared to the horrors of true military combat, but perhaps a few of them have reconsidered after going to wake up an adolescent child for school, only to find that he or she had hanged himself or herself. Misleading though it is, I think sadder lyrics make for a better--or at least a more unified--rewrite. However, the original song is also misleading since some of the Biblical characters were killed because they refused to compromise. Look for the melody here and try to skip the ad if you wish.
Hear the bell that's ringing?
It's starting once again,
So get yourself to class with all the books while you still can.

Don't bother with eye contact;
That game has been played,
But you don't have much money in your pockets or the bank.

You tell your folks,
And they say not to worry so,
But it's not they
Who are untouchables, no.

(Anxiety.) I wish that I could give you
Benzodiazepines to get you through.
(Anxiety.) There's no easy way out
With the fair-weather friends and the bullies about,

So try to look strong throughout the whole day,
Then later, cry your eyes away.

In their lofty wisdom
Your parents say to you,
If you would have friends, you must be friendly to them, too.

The classmates all are waiting
Until the final bell
So that they can run away from you like bats from Hell.

It seems immoral--
Even amoral is sad.
Is it true
Things are supposed to be this bad?

(Anxiety.) I wish that I could give you
Benzodiazepines to get you through.
(Anxiety.) There's no easy way out
With the fair-weather friends and the bullies about.

So try to look strong throughout the whole day,
Then later, cry your eyes away.

Bible verses and fervent prayer
Are both ineffective here;
Seems there isn't anybody
Who cares about your tears.

It's all clockwork; they have schedules to keep;
Get in the way, and then bad grades you'll reap.
It's machine land without much you can do
To make some of the other students like you.

So try not to cry until you're alone
So you won't...you won't be disowned.

(Anxiety.) I wish I could give you
Benzodiazepines to get you through.
(Anxiety.) There's no easy way out
With the fair-weather friends and the bullies about.

(Anxiety.) I wish I could give you
Benzodiazepines to get you through.
(Anxiety.) There's no easy way out...

The official website for 13 Reasons Why is easy to find, as are many official suicide hotlines. For all that the story gets wrong, it captures pervasive hopelessness well.
