The Lyrics

Although this is yet another tragedy, it was a preventable one. There have been many airshow race crashes of piston and jet aircraft, civilian and military alike... but the obsession with highly-modifoed Unlimited Class a/c with upgraded engines to attain speeds of 500+ mph has made these a/c dangerous even with all the safety mods. At anytime during a race a mechanical malfuntion can occur and also black-outs while pulling high-Gs as well as heart attacks, etc... and unfortunately this time on Sept 16, 2011 the P-51 "Galloping Ghost" experienced mechanic failure with the trim tabs, rounded upward, Mayday, 10Gs, inverted, and nosed down into the VIP seats filled with spectators. 9 killed, 75+ wounded. Tragic and puts more pressure to end these types of races (at least those piloted by civilians).
Reno Air Races they all meet,
Unlimiteds ready to go
Ain't no sound but the sound of high speed,
just one last pylon to go
It‘s not steady, left trim tab appears to be ripped
Upward, then inverted as hearts beat
Missed the Grandstand, headed for tarmac
Right into VIP seats!

A P-51 bites the dust
A P-51 bites the dust
That’s another one gone, yes, another one gone
A P-51 bites the dust
Hey, it’s gonna crash on you
A P-51 bites the dust

Jimmy Leeward and “Galloping Ghost” gone,
End of another P-51
NTSB say these races are bad,
so how much longer will they go on?

These piston aircraft are modified
To 500 mph speed
One mechanical failure, 10Gs
Gore all over the seats!

A P-51 bites the dust
A P-51 bites the dust
That’s another one gone, yes, another one gone
A P-51 bites the dust
Hey, it’s gonna crash on you
A P-51 bites the dust

A P-51 bites the dust
A P-51 bites the dust
A P-51 bites the dust
A P-51 bites the dust
Well, Thank God at least he missed the Grandstand
Before he hit the crowd
You could see him
Couldn’t flee him
You became a victim
in the crowd
There was nothing, nothing you could do
Not even time enough to pray
Pride of WW2, the trim tab rips
And nine people die that day

A 70+ year old pilot in a plane nearly as old, performing stunts and stresses the machine was never designed for. I saw the flyover for the pilot killed at the Kansas City air show last month. At least no one on the ground was hurt. Next day, different pilot, similar plane, same maneuvers. But, who knows what will or will not be allowed.

A terrible loss of another great fighter of World War II and a great pilot. But once you start messin' with the wings and control surfaces, you're asking for trouble- just saying. Bad for everyone, especially those who got killed in the 10x10s :-(

Everyone keeps talking about the 500 mph speed like it was any big deal. No it isn't. In WW2 the P-51D coudl go 440 mph and the P-51H plus many Brit fighters were approaching 490mph back then. The Japanese Shinden could do 466 mph and the German Fw Ta 152 472mph while the Do-335 could hit 477 mph. The Germans held the speed record pre-war in 1939 with the Me-209R at 469 mph. It took decades to beat the German machine...

My heart cries blood. Not only the loss of a skilled veteran pilot, who attempted to avert his plane to crash the audience, but also the loss of a beautiful veteran airplane. Fives - I'd interprete the "funny" here as "witty".
