The Lyrics

Nashville, Hillbilly setting
And the city don't know what the city is getting
The middle of a hoedown in a show with
Everything but Garth Brooks!

Time files. Doesn't seem a minute
Since the Grand Old Opry had the Oak Ridge Boys in it
Things change, don't you know that when you play at this level
There's no ordinary venue like Branson or Dollywood
Or Memphis or this place!!

On Night in Nashville and the world's your oyster
The cars are all Dodges and the moonshine ain't free.
You'll find a drunk in ever monster car rally
And if you're lucky then God's a redneck!
I can feel a Peterbuilt bearing down on another Mercedes!!

One town's very like another
When your head's down over your pieces, brother.
It's a drag, it's a bore, it's a really big city!!
Everyone drives through town as if they're Mario Andretti
Hillbilly girls, sassy, sweet and fair...
Big chests, long legs and really big hair

Anyone here not drunk has got to be a tourist
This city is not really for the purest;
I get my kicks drunk on Tennessee hard liquor!!!

On Night in Nashville and the world's your oyster
The cars are all Dodges and the moonshine ain't free.
You'll find a drunk in ever monster car rally
And if you're lucky then God's a redneck!
I can feel a Peterbuilt bearing down on another Mercedes!!

One has to be full of quickness
To avoid being another drive-by witness
Through the air bullets are always buzzin'
As feuding brothers kill their very own cousins...

And thank god I'm only a visitor here, avoiding it...

I don't see you guys rating
Or taking out your cousins dating...
They'll let you watch, they'll even invite you...
But the people here might even bite you!

On Night in Nashville and the world's your oyster
The cars are all Dodges and the moonshine ain't free.
You'll find a drunk in ever monster car rally
And if you're lucky then God's a redneck!
I can feel a Peterbuilt bearing down on another Mercedes!!

One Night in Nashville and you're looking for the nearest street signs
Trying to get out of town as fast as possible!!
There's nothing here but one-way streets
And the family trees are nothing but straight lines!!!
I can see the state patrol driving behind me...

I thought Murray Head sang the original. Who or what is "Robey"?

I admire the fact you tried this song from the "Chess" album, but you should have changed the "oyster" line so that it rhymed. Points off for pacing on a really good idea.

I appreciated the fact that it was about Nashville...pretty close to me. Good song!

Thanks for the info, Chuck! I wasn't familiar with that; "Robey" seems kinda obscure to me; I intuitively thought of Murray Head, since his version is more popular. So I guess "Robey" covered it. Again, thanks for the info.

actually... I was listening to a Crap From The Past show today, and played this, (it's awful compared to the better known Murray Head version), and this actually came out at the same time as the Murray Head version. The "original" would actually be the one from the musical Chess with the cast singing, but I believe Murray Head was a co-writer with a member of Abba. Either way, Murray Head's version is the best known.

I can't believe this song didn't get higher scores. It's awesome. The pacing is a little rough but you get points for difficulty index... I've been trying to do this song ever since I started writing parodies and I can't seem to pull it off.

yeah the robey version is so confidently paced, it's real power that's gained thru pace like the slow rock masters ac/dc. it's a great pop song.
Keith Harrison - December 29, 2012 - Report this comment
Louise Robey and Murray Head both did he original track to be released on the back of the musical 'Chess'. Murray Head's version was selected. Have a look on YouTube for Robey's version....it's an eye-opener after being used to he original.
