Parody Song Title:

"Stick Shift"

Parody Written by:

Mari Aranoff

The Lyrics

(A) I never got past the beginning stages of "driving stick." My last attempt was last spring, when my husband tried to help me. While practicing in a deserted lot on a Sunday afternoon, we were chased out by some butthole security guard with a whistle and nothing better to do. However, it's a new year! (B) This is my favorite Commodores song, maybe because it was recorded after Lionel Richie left. (C) I really try to avoid using names like "Honey," but it seems to work in this parody...
Honey, let's go out, me and you
My automatic's fine
But I'd like to drive yours, too
Honey, let's not wait anymore
It won't take long today
'Cause I know your butt is sore
Oh, come with me, and you will see
Reduce your load
And I will hit the road
With all three feet

Gonna be some tire burn
As I learn to drive stick shift.
Let's take your five-speed truck
And please don't say I suck.
We'll go out at first light,
No other cars in sight,
Driving stick shift.
I'll look ahead and steer,
Try not to grind the gears,
Driving stick shift.

Baby, I found a quiet place
It doesn't seem so hard
Why do you make that face?
Baby, I've tried to start it now
I'm giving it my all
But all it does is stall
Tell me again how
To get to first
Now I'm there...
Now I'm not...
But I will still hit the road
With all three feet

Gonna be some tire burn
As I learn to drive stick shift.
Let's take your five-speed truck
And please don't say I suck.
We'll go out at first light,
No other cars in sight,
Driving stick shift.
I'll look ahead and steer,
Try not to grind the gears,
Driving stick shift.

Gonna be some cuss words
Colorful words
Driving stick shift
I'll try to get through this
When that large oak tree I miss

Afterwards, when we are done
Let's go and have some fun
With the stick shift
So with a gentle hand,
I will grab your clutch and
Drive your stick shift.

Ahh, that last verse is close to my - er, heart. Smooth shifting, Mari D, 5th gear all around.

This joke is close to being a true story. A married couple is preparing to go to bed. The wife says "Honey, if anything happened to me, would you get remarried?" Husband says "Well, I suppose, eventually, get over my grief, meet the right gal." Wife says, "would she sleep in our bed?" Husband says, "Well, I suppose, it's the only bed in the house, now go to sleep." Wife says "one more thing, would she drive my car?" Husband says, "No, Dear. She can't drive a stick."

Royce and Johnny -- thanks! I figured that Johnny would be the first to get the joke at the end.

Heh, heh, heh, I never got past the beginning stages either. Hit a tree with my friend's truck and that was it for me! Hopefully I'll be in for a Thursday night session one of these days... things are finally getting settled around here. Hope I get a chance to see Paul too! I'm working on a song that I used to be able to play on my guitar, believe it or not...

Mari D - My voting lever is stuck in "fifth gear" for this one. Now johnny D has an unfair advantage in this instance. I think he has some alarm mechanism in his head that plugs him into the new entries as soon as they are up on the site. But I can't say that's a bad thing, he's always to first to make a great comment & vote when I post something I think is prettty good (if he knows the original), Yes, Johnny would certainly be quick to "grasp" your meaning at the end. Rick, "bah-dah-bing", but I liked the joke, anyway. Somehow it brought to mind the man & wife who regularly played tennis; one day she just CLOBBERS him, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Silence ensues on the drive home until finally she goes, "darling, are we ever going to make love again?" He thinks for a few moments and goes, "yes, we will dear...just not with each other" "bah-dah-bing". It seemed funnier than that when I heard it. Oh, well. Great job, Mari. Leah, good to see your comments again on the board, that's what reminded me to get over here to check this one out (wasn't sure I knew the original and skipped it earlier today). I misread your comment at first and since I didn't know what this parody was about I thought you had just HAD that accident with the tree. Hope you can make it on the 29th to the Espresso Gardens, I'll be leaving Willitts earlier in the day than when I came up from L.A. so I can hopefully get to San Jose in early enough to get settled into a room before I head over to the "Gardens". Last time I didn't get into 'Jose untithere until about 8:30 and just went straight to the cafe. I still had a case of the "road bends" going on.

Mari, this one made me smile because I had a terrible time learning to drive a stick. Great twist in the last verse, sign of a real pro at work. So where are these Espresso Gardens and when can I meet you guys there? By the way, car songs rule! d;:^)

Bob, you might be interested to know that we were rehearsing "Where Bryant Sleeps Tonight" in the parking lot of Espresso Gardens. (in San Jose, they have a website, you can down load a song from there we wrote about the place) We have a friend that can do the high voice part and he thought it was really funny. We will perform it next time he comes. Where do you live?
Leah Lockhart - January 16, 2004 - Report this comment
OK, I'll definitely try to make the 29th... I'm glad you'll be coming back around Paul!! Please don't read my lack of posting as lack of interest... I just had one crisis after another and had to take a break from internet surfing to regroup. But all is well, and the creative wheel is spinning (although I think the hamster's dead).
Paul Robinson - January 16, 2004 - Report this comment
Leah, Hey, I think I know just about where you're coming from. I was away about 10 days or so myself and needed to "throttle down" a bit also. Currently on a Strict regimen of much rest and relaxation up with my friends here in the North of California. Body and mind healing steadily. Still demented but that's a state that ain't going away as far as I can see. Looks like a potential mob of "Amirightophiles" may decend upon the 'Gardens' on the 29th. Could be the event of the decade (or the decadent). Extra security may be needed.

Bob -- And thanks for the comments! Do you live in the Bay Area? Just in case, here's the link to "The Garden": http://espresso-garden.com. We've been mentioning amiright every time that we go there. It would be really something if a bunch of y'all descended upon the place!
Bob Gomez - January 17, 2004 - Report this comment
I'm just south of you guys in Santa Cruz County. I will see you in the parking lot. I'll take the bass part on "Bryant": "lockhimaway---himaway--lockhimaway---himaway..." I think audience participation is called for, also. d;:^o
