The Japanese Senkaku Islands (Chinese Diaoyu) are once again in dispute. With China increasing its military naval presence around the islands and sending jets over disputed airspace. Japan claims the islands historically and has met the Chinese threat with naval warships and fighters of its own. Escalatory actions could easily turn into a miscalculation on either side with shots fired. SOS John Kerry is deeply concerned about these developments and doesn’t want the US to get involved over territorial disputes in Asia. Japan’s foreign minister has stated that China’s actions could “trigger unpredictable events.”
