The Lyrics

The East German Trabant was one of the worst cars in history. It was produced from the late '50s until 1991. The old Trabi was made of Duroplast and recycled materials, had a 26 HP two-stroke engine (0-60 in 21 seconds!), had no brake lights nor turn signals, and belched smoke. Lacking a fuel pump, the tank sat directly over the engine for gravity feed! 3.7 million were produced. They became scrap like the Yugo... but now there are plans to develop the Trabant NT as a modern electric car. The first model debuted in 2009 at an auto show. This would be a 45Kw type with an asynchronous electric motor and designed to modern standards, sorta like a Fiat 500.
On the road again?
Remake of the old Trabi 601
Replacing old 2-stroke with electric engine
Can anyone redeem clunker that did offend?

On the road again?
Old Trabi had Duroplast construction
0-60 in 21 seconds
NT modern designed for the next Gen

On the road again?
New tech, non-smoking, built to glide down the highway
45Kw engine
Hard to believe that Herpa could find a way
To change that Commie crate, with innovation

Remake of the old Trabi 601
Replacing old two-stroke with electric engine
Can anyone redeem clunker that did offend?

Yes, the Germans can!!!

I bet the new electric Trabant will probably have a greater range than the original, what with the border out of the way and gasoline no longer rationed. I heard the Trabi's doors were made with waste material from a woolen mill or old ground up army jackets mixed with glue.

First production car to use recycled waste. Cotton waste and phenol resin. Duroplast was like Bakelite, a plastic relative and so could be shaped for the car bodies easily.

Never heard of the Trabant, but lots of information online - some interesting history on this. On the Road Again with the question mark is a good title for this one.

Thanks Timmy, but might I ask how old you are? Saying you never heard of the Trabant is like saying you never heard of the VW Beetle! The Beetle is the most produced car in history, but the Communist E German "people's car" (actually in Russian Trabant means Satellite) only sold 3.7 million from '59-91...

Rob, I'm old enough to have heard of it, but still never had before yesterday. Were their lots of Trabants in the US? There were lots of Beetles and I had heard of them; in fact, even knew a few people who drove one. Some people just live a more sheltered life. I never had much interest in cars, except to drive one and to hope it kept running. If I was from Germany, it might be different.

Timmy, I see that you are older than me! Just that the Trabi was such a bad car like the Yugo. Figured you must have heard of it. E Germany suffered badly under Slavic control. Not allowed to have indigenous arms, cars, aircraft, appliances, heavy industries. They did what they could. Average life of the clunker was 28 years avg. When reunification happened in 1990, the Trabi became useless and was stopped in 1991. E Germans gave them away for old German cars and imports. Some were turned into modified racers, others for art pieces like sections of the Berlin Wall. If I had money to waste, I would buy a NT as collector's item.
