Who can forget the pre-statehood Idaho heroine and female Zorro- the Black Whip? Barbara Meredith must avenge the murder of her brother who was the male Black Whip and so dons the costume to fight the Stagecoach Company's owner Dan Hammond who has been terrorizing locals over the impending vote for Idaho statehood. He's against it and the threat to his hold on power over the people. But the Black Whip and US Agent Vic Gordon fight him and his henchmen time and again. Black Whip outrides, outfights, and outguns Hammond and his men. Idaho becomes a state. In the 1944 movie "Zorro's Black Whip" Barbara Meredith was played by the lovely Linda Stirling (also the Tiger Woman)!

Have you seen the Republic serial? One of the best westerns ever with lots of fighting, horse chases, explosions, whip action, pistol and carbine action, and of course the chapter cliffhanger endings! Linda Stirling is great but had trouble b/c she had never rode a horse before becoming the Black Whip. She had both female and male stunt people. And I have to say that for a Republic serial of 1944, some of the stunts and action sequences are kinda brutal for the day (a coach driver shot in the chest off the coach bouncing off the horses down to the ground/ Black Whip whipping a henchman right off a cliff/ the mine scene where a coal oil fire is running down the tracks to a massive explosion/and the evil leader being trampled to death by Black Whip's horse at the end!!! The compilation DVD sells for just $8 from Amazon. It is well worth it and runs almost 3 hrs. Now can anyone name her horse? Zorro's was Toronado :)

Sounds like a good one. l love serials. I grew up watching the Flash Gordon ones and later got into Captain Marvel, Batman, Superman, and lots of others. My local theater still showed them when I was a kid.

Porfle, you would LOVE "Zorro's Black Whip"! Btw, did you ever see the Captain America serials? I have the 1970s, 1980, and 2011 Captain America movies with "The Avengers" coming out next month... but none of the old Cap stuff :(

No, haven't seen the Cap serials unfortunately. The only ones I have on DVD are Captain Marvel, The Phantom Creeps, Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, and a John Wayne serial about a stunt pilot (can't remember the name--"Winged Avenger" or something ).. I had several others on VHS but no way to play them now.
