The Lyrics

I wonder if Patrick ever heard of this gun? The story goes something like this: in the 1940s a sexy lady spy stole plans to a French arsenal SMG designed by Colonel Favier. The design was adapted by a firm in Geneva known as Rexim SA and became known as the Rexim-Favor in the mid-'50s. Because Rexim could not manufacture the guns they contracted out to the Spanish arsenal at La Coruna who made the first batch of 5000 SMGs for the open market. The gun then became known as La Coruna. Due to expense and over-complication of design internally which exposed serious flaws, the gun didn't sell well and Rexim went bankrupt in 1957, leaving the Spanish holding the majority of the batch. They sold some to foreign armies in Africa but also gave away most of the SMGs to African nationalists for free to unload them. The gun fired from a closed bolt; when cocked, the bolt ran forward to chamber a round, propelled by the usual sort of return spring. When the trigger was pulled, a second spring sent a cylindrical hammer unit forward to strike the firing pin and fire the round. The recoil force of the spent case thus had to overcome both springs to perform the loading cycle! Due to the closed bolt feature it tended to suffer from cook-off when left loaded after prolonged burst of fire! It was expensive and flawed- not a good day's work by the lady spy!!!
The tale of Rexim
Sexy lady spy in ‘40s stole plans
Firm in Geneva derived the submachine gun
Poor design went to nationalist Africans!

The tale of Rexim
Firm couldn’t manufacture them
5000 batch made in Spain, La Coruna’s sin
Poor design went to nationalist Africans!

The tale of Rexim
Over-complicated loading cycle for its day
Bad dual-spring action
And “Cook offs” happened after prolonged burst sprays
Gun give-away, spy’s bad work questioned

Sexy lady spy in ‘40s stole plans
A firm in Geneva made the submachine gun
Poor design went to nationalist Africans!

Sounds like the ways manufacturers have to alter their designs to pass muster with the ATF technical branch. Maybe this was trick, with the faulty design being left for the spy to steal, knowing the enemy would waste time and money pusuing a bad lead. Ever hear of the Rhodesian Commando 9mm?

The Kommando 9 looks very tubular, like a mini-Sterling! I think this might have led to the South African Sanna 77 SMG (they look almost identical). Not surprising since what was left of Rhodesian forces went to South Africa (the Sealous Scouts being the best bushmen ever). Here is a pic of the Sanna: http://en.valka.cz/attachments/1454/Sanna-77_3.jpg
