The Lyrics
Well I live in Northeast Oklahoma
And I’m cruising through backwater towns
I have charted a course to Vinita
But tonight I am Owasso bound
Got some diesel back in White Oak yesterday
At three a gallon, it took almost all my pay
Like all the locals here I clutter up my home
Too poor to leave, I live in a tornado zone
Want to escape from Northeast Oklahoma
And believe me it would be a leap
There are llamas out there in the pastures
And some horses, some cows and some sheep
I’ve got bills to pay and pollen up my nose
More ragweed’s coming, every time the damn wind blows
They say these small towns aren’t what they used to be
But I’ve got a hunch mine’s stuck in 1893
So if you come to Northeast Oklahoma
Better bring you some OFF and some DEET
Tell the whole town that I’m on vacation
And I turn off the phone when I sleep
Now I drive my car ‘round Oklahoma
More and more miles from home every year
All us Indians are all poor and on welfare
And the dead-end jobs all dead-end here
I’m an Okie like my father was before
Can’t make a living as an Okie anymore
There ain't much future lest a preacher you shall be
Of bars there’s 2 and churches we got 23
