The Lyrics

Plastic Paradise by Jeff “Dr Chordate” Moran

As I walk through the grocery store pushin’ a cart,
I take a look at what’s in it, and it ain’t too smart.
‘Cause it’s full of plastic that’s lastin’ too long.
Even Mama Earth thinks it will never be gone.
But I ain’t never tossed a can that can be recycled.
Treat it like junk, but might need it for survival.
You better watch ‘bout how you usin’ and abusin’
Or you and your homeland might be oozin’.
I really hate to gripe but I gotta poke,
As we croak, and I see all the stacks smokin’.
We got the kind of place other planets wanna be like.
Not too hot and not too cold, temperature’s just right.

But we’re spending our lives living in a plastic paradise.
But we’re spending our lives living in a plastic paradise
We keep spending our lives living in a plastic paradise.
We keep spending our lives living in a plastic paradise.

Look at the packaging they got me purchasing.
Little triangles on the bottom surfacing.
Number one: polyethylene terephthalate –
Food jars, beverage bottles, clothing, and carpet.
Number two: high density polyethylene –
Detergent and milk jugs, deck furniture, toy things.
Then there’s number three: polyvinyl chloride-
Frames for doors and windows, credit cards, Naugahyde.
Number four: low density polyethylene –
Packaging like shopping bags and bubble wrap make this scene.
And on to number five: that’s polypropylene –
For bottle caps and drinking straws, diapers in the latrine.

And we’re spending our lives living in a plastic paradise.
And we’re spending our lives living in a plastic paradise
We keep spending our lives living in a plastic paradise.
We keep spending our lives living in a plastic paradise.

Number six: polystyrene in packing peanuts,
Foam cups, egg boxes, meat trays, and insulation.
Number seven is labelled “other”. What does that mean?
Like nylon fabric and compact discs. It’s sure not green.
There’s money in plastic, like the graduate.
Better pay attention before it gets too late.
They say we gotta learn, but who’s gonna teach us?
They’ll have to swim through plastic if they’re gonna reach us.

‘Cause we’re spending our lives living in a plastic paradise.
‘Cause we’re spending our lives living in a plastic paradise
We keep spending our lives living in a plastic paradise.
We keep spending our lives living in a plastic paradise.

A very green parody. Excellent research and fun rhymes. 555 ("Your plastic paradise won't last/You got no future and no past"--Nina Hagen, "Smack Jack.")
