The Lyrics

This parody, my 115th but first of Deana Carter, concerns the shady practice of match fixing. The title stems from one particular form, called point shaving, in which the favoured team in a sporting event intentionally loses against the spread to benefit gamblers who, being assured of the result by said team, bet against it. However, there are many types of match fixing. I, for one, consider "closed" leagues' (that is, no promotion or relegation is involved) susceptibility to also-ran teams tanking late in the season to secure a better draft pick or two a form of season-long match fixing. Regardless, it's more prevalent than you think. As for the parody itself, it is set after an unnamed team has been caught in point shaving.
A big cash reward is what we thought would be stored
In our war-chest once we'd won by two
'Cos you see, the spread had us twelve points ahead;
We'd agreed A.T.S. to lose.

I wish that we'd seen through their claims that it would be alright;
But now that we're caught red-handed, we're in jail tonight!

You see, the feds did find out ('cos that is what they're about),
Put our names on the Most Wanted list
And they took all our green that from the bookies had been;
Did we shave our points for this?

To you who will seek the truth, I entreat
That you play for love of the game;
Else, the fate you'll have met is to make someone bet
That you will trade your trophies for shame.

If you want money, ensure that it's wages you've earned,
In case that one blows the whistle and you feel quite burnt.

Would you face our estate? If not, there ain't no debate:
If you do, it's no slap on the wrist.
Ponder thus our disgrace; win by the sweat on your face,
Lest you shave your points for this.
Did we shave our points for this?
Play to win!!!
