The Lyrics

Entry for Ages of Amiright Event 3.
Livin' in harmony
Dave, start the choir on 'em
(The Mormon Tabernacle Choir hums "ABC" by The Jackson 5)

SLC, now let us explain it
Let's de-abbreviate it
For your edification I'm unwrapping it
S is for Salt, L is for Lake near The Temple
C is the City, now ain't that simple?
The City was the place to pray, and Brigham Young was sellin'
His dream was to make a place major Mormon there
We're gonna give some props out and have a little party or tribute we say, a little celebratin'
Check it!

Now this here city ain't nowhere near Idaho
It's in the north and center of Utah, now don't ya know
Hot in the summer, pretty cool in the winter, ain't no doubt
You can fly up, bring your girlfriend and rent some space
Let's not be blunt-- B to the L to the U to the N to the T
Brigham Young said, "This is the place" (It ain't no mystery!)
It's SLC, and yes, the county's same-named, got it?
If you aren't a Mormon, then you don't have to sweat it
We got Jews and Episcopals who all can relate to that
And in this song, we aren't splitting hairs and forsaking that
It ain't Perdue, it's SLC, and we all live in it
You won't need L.D.S. membership

(Chorus)You down with SLC? (Oh yeah, whoopee!)
You down with SLC? (Oh yeah, whoopee!)
You down with SLC? (Oh yeah, whoopee!)
Who's down with SLC? (It's the one for me!)

My name is Rocky, SLC's most vaunted mayor
I'm Democrat to the core and I ain't no player-hater
I staged a protest, the angriest, yes, against our President
I support gay rights and a greener environment
Now some say that I don't run my office properly
Well, only 1 in 6 here live in poverty!
Liquor sales are on my list, stop Kyoto Treaty, now please re-elect me?

Do you have a sister or brother who don't want a husband or wife?
Point them to SLC, 'cause we have a gay style of life
But that's not all, just look at us and you'll know right away
That this is the place to live, so relocate straightaway
Take your pick of the neighborhoods, take a look there
The Avenues, Federal Heights, Marmalade District are here
You can risk it, Central City is a bit poor, we know
Little bit of gentrification will clean up a bit, we know
You may be shocked 'cause all around now we are diversified
Say SLC (SLC!), we got our civic pride
Just make a visit, stay a spell, every tourist dollar counts
Maybe get you a discount! (Chorus)

Well, hola! Come to SLC, si?
Come to Glendale, Rose Park, no tenement tract--up and coming, matter of fact
Won't you come up new immigrants? Got a place vacant
East Europeans, Somalis and the Tongans all love it
Now you must be wondering if I've covered everything
No, because I gotta mention our culture and re-cre-ating
Hiking, camping, boating and skiing, you won't want to leave
Got the Mormon Tabernacle Choir here, aim to please
"Music & the Spoken Word", heard on your radio
And there's bands playing blues and punk and getting all emo
The museums, come see 'em, get into relics and art
All at the SLC, a city dear to my heart
Hey now, hey now, our population of 1-7-8 thou
Says "Hello", we're much friendlier than in the South
Let's be number one in your choice to be a resident
I will hush my mouth soon, I will close out my hymn

Deseret Industries, a special kind of business
Poor folks got their start again in SLC thanks all to this
Now I am pretty sure that it is time to quit it
This SLC song, yeah, might have overdid it!

(Chorus one last time, so it stays stuck in your head for the next 3 weeks…)

I forgot to add an explanatory note that Mayor "Rocky" who speaks in this parody is based on Ross "Rocky" Anderson, who is really the mayor of Salt Lake City as of this writing.
I also want to cite wikipedia, lightplanet.com, and yes, spaff.com as sources/inspiration for the material here. Full disclosure--I have never been to the city, but it sounds like a nice place to visit (and *maybe* I would live there ;) ).

Yeah, you know me! I went out and bought the MP3 so that I could follow along. Honestly.

Excellent stuff, Aggro, with some great subs. Clearly you did your research - I've lived in the SLC burbs for most of my life, and there's plenty of stuff here I didn't know. (Rocky's real name is Ross? There's a Marmalade District? We have non-whites?)

Oh, and Salt Lake *is* a nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there.

(Ages3) "Dave, start the choir on 'em" While I realize this wasn't to me, I couldn't help but wink for that one . . .this song was a parody of one of the most difficult 90s songs I could possibly imagine, and about a topic I am dearly intertwined to . . .I happen to love spaff.com's writings for the same reason I love this parody. . .while it's too early in the comp to make any guarantees. . .I will not be surprised if this ends up getting top nods from me. While I rarely write about my political beliefs. ..my parodies kinda give them away (IE He Likes Guys, Rainbow) Truely a gifted parodist you are to turn such an important thing into a light hearted and comedious parody, not to mention a tribute to an underated city. . .and parodist

Agri, I think this is one of the best you've ever done. But hey, San Antonio did manage to steal the Starzz from them.... oh, wait, I don't live there anymore.---MM

(SOTM) great comments by Matthias and Spaff - it's funny just writing about SL City to a rap rhythm imo Ag - we hear a lot about the city in Australia, but I don't know anyone who's ever visited it, so I guess spaff must be right (he usually is) - 555
