The Lyrics

DKTOS? This page has an MP3 - look under "Other Media", third from the bottom. I like some of REM's songs, though this isn't one of them.
[intro]

Oh.... I'm
a singer
and singing a tune
that has no rhyme scheme
with vague talk about nothin'
resistance is fu-tile!

Oh no - I've blabbed too much
I can't shut up

Here's me in the corner
Here's me with this rock tripe
Whining and a-bitchin'
Trying to uh-noy you
And we all know that I can do it!
Oh no - I've said too much
I never can shut up

I know that I'm quite annoying
In part 'cause I can not sing

I think I thaw a puddy tat!

Do you all wonder
Why this song's underpowered?
I - sing with no inflection
Trying to be (all) serious
What comes across? pretentious mess, yes
Oh yes - I run my trap

A yap yap yap!

Repetitive
Repetitive
Don't pick your words randomly
Repetitive
What gives?
This needs more lyric'ly
Wa-ail!
Wait 'til all this novelty
Comes crashing to ground!
Now it's good
And torched!

I can't think of any lyrics
But still I go on and sing

You think too much your mind will fry!

[short break]

This song is full of cheese
Full of Holey cheese!

Still me in the corner
Still me with this rock tripe
Whining and a-bitchin'
Trying to uh-noy you
And we all know that I can do it!
Oh no - I've said too much
I never can shut up

I think I've sung this already
I think that this song should end

I think it's got a few more lines

Now end this cruelty
Whine! whine! wine whine!
End this wine and cheese!
Quickly please, quickly please
Please!

Really good send-up of the overly-pretentious and self-important lyrics of the OS...loved the single lines, particularly, " I think I thaw a puddy tat!" ~ ~ ~ but the whole thing was just excellent, Jack...5's ~ ~ ~
alvin rhodes - April 21, 2006 - Report this comment
thanks for skewering this goofy song...which wasn't half as goofy as the video
Stephen Harrington - April 21, 2006 - Report this comment
555, very good. I agree too. Not a favorite of mine(I like Drive, Driver 8 and Orange Crush the most).
Peter Andersson a.k.a K1chyd - April 21, 2006 - Report this comment
Ever heard of driving schools that practise "descriptive driving" (the student has to talk about why and what he/she is doing while driving)? Your new words here are "descriptive singing". Very good, kinda like Weird Al's take on Smells like teen spirit, though the difference is that this song deserves it much, much, much more. 4:28 minutes of torture improved to 555.

I didn't get the "I think I thaw a puddy tat" bit though, mimicking Elmer Fudd's dialect?
Michael Pacholek - April 21, 2006 - Report this comment
Now that's "Using Your Derision"! (The title I used to parody this.) Way to go on skewering Michael Stipe's tripe.
Joel Martinez - April 21, 2006 - Report this comment
I Do Know The OS, and it was pretty funny the way you did it, as long as you're not assuming that any of the band members think such thing, COOL!555
Paul Robinson - April 21, 2006 - Report this comment
Peter - FYI, the "puddy tat" remark actually references the cartoon character "Tweety bird", I believe...a wise-ass nemesis to a cartoon cat, as I recall...Jeez, I can't believe I remember ANY of this crap...I swear I haven't seen any of this stuff in at least 40 years...
Tommy Turtle - April 21, 2006 - Report this comment
"pretentious mess, yes" - Well said, young Ant. I barely KTOS, as it always seemed too inane to sit through. "resistance is fu-tile!" - I picture aliens with robot voices arriving to take over.... Maybe all new OSs should be screened for approval by Red Ant before release. We'd have less crap, but less good parody material as well. 100% rock-solid Fives.
Agrimorfee - April 21, 2006 - Report this comment
555 even though I like the original just fine.

REM=Raw Emotion Missing. I like some of their music but, some of it just lacks balls. Great job........555
Iced print - April 21, 2006 - Report this comment
I like balls, does that make me gay? 555BTW

This is just as good a send-up as Corky and the Juice Pigs parody of REM on MAD a few years ago. Great job, Jack.
Larry Hensley - April 22, 2006 - Report this comment
Always liked the original, but this was the perfect parody for this song anyway, so funny. 5s

Thanks Paul, Alvin, Step-chan, Peter, Michael, Joel, TT, Agrimorfee, Rick C, Iced Print, Dee and Larry.

Paul: Yep, that line you quoted was Tweety Bird's most famous. The cat's name was Sylvester. Tweety kind of looks like Michael Stipe too - small body, big, bald head - lol.

Alvin: Please don't remind me of the video, I've tried so hard to forget it. ;-)

Step-chan: DK the first 2 and don't remember Orange Crush all that well, except the chorus.

Peter: Hadn't heard that term before, but I like it. As for your question, Tweety Bird is a very old cartoon character, and that line is pretty much a direct quote from him.

Michael: I'll check out your semi-plug in a bit.

Joel: No idea what the band thinks about this song, though I know they are wholly embarrassed by "Shiny Happy People" (Whiny, Crappy Pop Song maybe?...)

TT: The second line you quoted is what the Borg on ST:TNG say. Since I had already used "drone" in my WP bash, I used a roundabout way of saying it here. As for screening new songs, no thanks, too torturous, and 90% of the bands out there today wouldn't have a CD if its release depended on my approval.

Agrimorfee: Thanks, and I won't hold it against you. ;-)

Rick C: I thought it stood for Rarely Energetic Music. I like yours better.

Iced Print: I'd be lying if I didn't say I knew this would get a gay reference in comments. To answer your question, I guess that depends on what kind (or whose) balls you like....

Dee: Never saw that, but I'm honored at the comparison you drew between this and a parody skit aired on MAD TV.

Larry: Well, there are 20-some parodies of this song here. I see M&P posted their recorded version, so I'm off to check that out.

The lyrics? The VIDEO to this song is twice as nonsensical. Salute to you, Ant-Man.
Adagio - April 22, 2006 - Report this comment
Liked it a lot. It has kind of a sulky mood to it. About Sylvestor and Tweetie Bird? Tweety says "I t'ot I taw a puddy tat. I thought you were trying to "thaw" him from the frozen state......5's
Peter Andersson a.k.a K1chyd - April 22, 2006 - Report this comment
Tweety Bird, aha! I'm sure it wasn't aired here when I was a kid, but I think it might be now, that would explain why my mind wandered of in the cartoonish direction even if it landed in the wrong series.
Red Ant - April 22, 2006 - Report this comment
Thanks YAD and Pat, and you're right, that is a much closer (perfect) way that Tweety spoke.
Paul Robinson - April 22, 2006 - Report this comment
Red...gosh, ya know, I was even PICTURING Stipe as Tweety Bird when I read that line originally....I guess that's what made it stand up out so in my mind at the time. "Sylvester"...yeah...I just couldn't remember the cat's name...I kept thinking of the cat in Tom & Jerry...and I KNEW it wasn't the same character....but I couldn't picture him..."Sykvester" was a black cat in the cartoon and kind of drooled out his words as I now recall it....Jeez...think of all the consequential bits and items I may be now pushing out of my brain to make room for this crap...lol...somebody at work will probably ask me an important Tax Question Monday and I won't know the answer...but - I WILL be able to tell him about Tweety/Sylvester/Michael Stipe and some other cartoon characters as well...

Although I like the OS a lot, I agree with your point of view, and also think there need to be more parodies that lampoon the OS itself (much like Weird Al's "Smells Like Nirvana")

(SOTM) Sorry, Red Ant, but you don't get straight fives from me this time. Your pacing was perfect, I liked the "Puty Tat" lyric, your lyrics were quite humorous, and I five you for that, but "Losing My Religion" is a classic. Dissing this song is like dissing The Bible to me. 552 Better luck next month, man.

(SOTM) best line: "I think I thaw a puddy tat!" - very funny, Red - I actually like and never get sick of this OS, even as it plays as muzak in my supermarket, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate you skewering it so thoroughly, Jack - LOL - 555

SOTM...very funny, Red Ant...I have to admit that the OS never really had much meaning...(though I always caught myself singing along with it)...but I never really realized how LITTLE sense it makes until you made me really think about it...=)

(SOTM) I haven't got a clue what's going on here, but it makes more sense than many of the songs I've heard on the radio recently.

Thanks Paul, Olvan, Chris, Agrimorfee, Cat, Rex, Scathe, Matthias, bobpie, Rick C, Max, Johnny D, Phil, Stu, Larry, Arwen, and Jay.

Jay: Song satire; "Making fun of music. One song at a time...."

Arwen: Glad I got you thinking here!

Stu: "...plays as muzak in my supermarket"; the only real beef I had with this song, aside from the goofy video, is it was horribly overplayed, and Stipe's voice, the lyrics and the mandolin. Other than that I like it too. ;-)

Johnny D: Glad I repeated that twice, heh heh.

Max: Thanks for fulfilling your commenting requirement this month.

Rex: I didn't remember that you (and several others) are REM fans. Glad you still liked it.

Chris: I guess I'll hold off on posting my parody of the Bible then.

Olvan: I'm trying to up that number - thanks for checking in here!

Paul: Useless information comes in handy when playing Trivial Pursuit, Jeopardy, and the like. Besides, they'll change the tax codes next year anyway, so some of what you know now will be truly useless in a year, lol.

I didn't realize you did this awhile ago, I'm surprised I've never seen it. Very clever string of seemingly random lyrics that work very well together. I don't have any problems with the way you voted. Very well done :)
