Parody Song Title:

"Lincoln and Obama"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

The election of Barack Obama, a lawyer from Illinois, invites comparison with Abraham Lincoln, who also came to Washington in a time of deep political divisions, and whose administration was defined in part by racial issues. There are several good arrangements of this rousing campaign song on youtube. The number of verses and their order varies a lot, which is typical of songs from the era. Feel free to arrange to your liking.
The choice of near half of the nation
Three years ago nobody knew
The spark of the next conflagration
Abe Lincoln and Obama, too

A tall, gangly Illinois lawyer
A country divided in two
Of our rights he will be the destroyer
Abe Lincoln and Obama, too

We went for the son of Hawaii
Regrets now, a little too late
Four years are too many, oh myyyy!
For heaven's sake don't give him eight!

And those who would rather have freedom
Than payouts from government's hand
If Obama decides you don't need 'em
Your Bibles and guns will be banned

For "choice" is a term for "abortion"
Beyond that it doesn't extend
Your earnings? You'll keep a small portion
The rest is for Congress to spend

Through bribery and intimidation
We've seen what Obama can do
While honest men seethe in frustration
Just waiting for November two

That old Harry Reid of the Senate
Has high hopes for Election Day
He's living on some other planet
We're sending him back there to stay

And then there is Nancy Pelosi
A spiteful and arrogant shrew
Next session may she be a "no see"
Let's "hope" we can "change" her out, too.

For those who are students of history
Have seen this progression before
The future is really no mystery
Depression, inflation, and war

Unless we recapture our nation
Restore it the Land of the Free
Invite all to our celebration
And serve them a big cup of tea

I KNOW this song. Ronnie Gilbert (of The Weavers) and a folk group did this in Ken Burns's Civil War series. I think the Hutchinson familly would be in agreement with your parody. ;D

Unlike OMR, I wasn't born when the OS was popular. [ ;=)] But I'll follow his tips to find it.
Unlike Obama, Lincoln lived his whole life in the US, so the parallelism is a bit strained.
But your verse is well paced and hits SO many valid points. 555

I've always liked the melody of this one. It was a golden age of patriotic jingles including "Bonnie Blue Flag", "Battle Cry of Freedom", "Hail Columbia", "Old 1812" etc. That fellow who called me a nazi hasn't chimed in on this one, yet. He should see the verses I left out. Whatever happened to Tommy and FG? I really miss their input. Glad you all liked the song. That means a lot. Especially when I dig up an obscurity like this.

The biggest difference between Lincoln and Obama is that Lincoln had to fight and win a Civil War. Obama... not yet. And why would we regret voting for him? He's doing a fantastic job. The Dow crossed 11,000 today for the first time since the moron was still in office.

Michael - apologies that I suspected you are the Unobomber. You may be no gentleman in the baby boomer Southern sense, but you are no gutless coward even if he espouses your beliefs. I irritate you, but you'd never try to drive me from this site. ;D

The Dow index matters to people who can afford to invest in stocks. Most folks are still looking for jobs to pay the rent. I don't know how many right wing web sites you wander into, but there are folks talking Civil War II. Most of it is just wishful thinking, but it just takes one Tim McVeigh or a Joseph Stack with a bigger airplane to do a lot of damage. Obama is all but inviting it. When your plans or policies start provoking a violent response, it is time to reexamine them. Our government was designed to perform a few specific and relatively non controversial functions. Whenever you see divisiveness and name-calling and the potential for worse, look into the Constitution and see if the government should even be involved. In the case of Abraham Lincoln, he did have the option of allowing the South to go its own way, as the 10th Amendment allows. Or he could have supported the purchase of slaves from the owners as a preliminary step to emancipation. It might not have pleased the radical abolitionists, but it would have been far preferable to 600,000 dead. I think Obama is by education or instinct incapable of understanding the idea of an American wanting to be left alone. I have no quarrel with leftists's tastes in music, art, literature, etc as long as they pay for them . Anyone wanting to help the poor may do so, but only to the extent of his own resources. Freedom is the solution. We are not a united people, or a common cause, leave that to the Commies or Nazis. We are a nation of diverse goals and interests, and the only function of a proper government is to protect the country and provide a secure economic framework for everyone to go his own way.

Bless you Patrick! Old Abe said two things about my people here..." To lose Kentucky would be the same as to lose the whole game" and "I hope to have God on my side, but I have to have Kentucky". If you doubt me, read Bruce Catton, :)

Well done, Patrick. Constitutional freedoms do seem to be elusive concepts for those on the left to grasp. For some reason, when they get in power, Republicans don't do much better; but I think we will be enjoying some November tea parties this year.
