Song Parodies -> "A Real Good Music Man"

Original Song Title:

"A Real Piano Player"

Original Performer:

Al Jolson and Jimmy Durante

Parody Song Title:

"A Real Good Music Man"

Parody Written by:

Old Man Ribber

The Lyrics

To understand this, check out TOS on Youtube. Rather than Jolson and Durante, I envision this as a duet between the parodist Old Man Ribber and his musician "host" (me!). I've used both the song and the patter from the routine. For Durante's piano breaks, I've used bits and pieces of other tunes and identified each with a (*). This project is somewhat more demanding than my usual fare, but it's been the labor of love. As the Schnozolla always said..."Ev'rybody wants ta get inta de act!". ;D

(Music intro, then singing)

OMR: Mr. Tolstoy needed a piece of paper - before he could write his words.
John James Audubon needed a bunch of brushes - before he could start painting birds.
And friends, Ribber needed a clever song to use - before he could do his shtick.
TW: Rib! Stop worryin'. I'm here. Here's the tune, here's the time - start your trick!

(Spoken)
OMR: Say Todd - can you pick me a good O.S.?
TW: A good O.S.? I don't believe I know that one. How does it go?
OMR: No, I mean can you choose a good song to parody...like Allan Sherman or Weird Al?
TW; I'm even better! Would those guys ever select Desifinado? (chord) Gimme Dat Ding? (chord) The Ride Of The Valkyries? (chord) Ten Green Bottles? (chord) Take Five? (chord) Hah! Weird Al, make way for Odd Todd!

(Sung)
OMR: Mr. Whitford, you're a masterpiece! What are we waiting for? Let's go!

OMR: 'Cause it's a thrill - when a real good music man - picks a song for me.
It makes for great parody - when he goes:
TW: (1) Why do Gypsies big and little always play a lousy fiddle?
OMR: It fills the bill - when a well-trained music man - picks one for me to do.
It makes my humor come through - when he goes:
TW: (2) Hey there, I-ron Man! Hurry up, I've go to go to the can!

OMR: I'm just blown away. I'm up on Cloud Nine.
TW: My ear ain't made of tin or wood.
Hey Ribber - get a grip! I'm not that fine.
OMR: But Spike Jones was never this good!

TW: Dig this:
(3) Lar-go al fac-to-tum del-la cit-ta. Lar-BURPPP!
OMR: You made Figaro pay!
TW: You know this is real frustratin' - I know almost any song.
OMR; Keep on choosin' Todd - some hit we can wrong!
BOTH: 'Cause it's a kill - when a good old music man - chooses musically!

(Instrumental break, then sudden silence and spoken words)

TW: Unfortunaley Mr. Ribber, I'm not Ozzy Osbourne. I'm more like Ozzie Nelson!

(Singing resumes at bridge)
OMR: Keep working, Todd. Use that touch.
Give me some old standards - rap, rock, and such.
TW: You could do as well. Just try it, you'll learn.
Take a turn:
OMR: (4) Joseph Haydn now is gone, but this music lingers on.

TW: Alvin Rhodes did great writing. He's second to none.
OMR: I'll stay with you, Todd. For an old coot, you're fun!
BOTH: For it's no shill - when an old time music man - picks the melody!
Picks the melody!

(1) - Holiday For Strings by David Rose, (2) Iron Man by Black Sabbath, (3) Largo Al Factotum (Figaro!) from Rossini's "Barber Of Seville", (4) Second Movement theme from Haydn's "Surprise Symphony". It wasn't too difficult to separate Old Man Ribber from Todd Whitford, which speaks volumes about my psychological health! ;D

How silly of me! and I play the piano well too, the scale starts at C not A, so E is the third white key! LOL!! :-D But I'll still give you three 5's anyway... :-)
