The Lyrics

I live in Holon in Israel. The main bus company in Israel is named "Egged." The name Charlie is actually appropriate, because it is fairly common among people from Morrocco, of whom there are quite a few in Israel. The #74 bus route goes from Holon to Tel Aviv - part of the route is on Derech Haifa (Haifa Road). Shekels are Israel's currency (the bus ride in question now costs six shekels, although it was less than half of that when I wrote the parody). "rehov" is Hebrew for street. "felafel" are chickpea balls fried in oil - a Middle Eastern fast food "Kol yom b'sha'a shalosh" is Hebrew for every day at 3 o'clock "Ma nishma" is Hebrew for how are you
Let me tell you a story of a man named Charlie.
What a happy guy he once was.
He put six shekels in his pocket, kissed his wife and family
Went to ride on the Egged bus.

Chorus:
Well he never returned, no, he never returned
And his fate is still unlearned.
He may ride forever on the bus of Egged.
He's the man who never returned.

Charlie handed in six shekels at the Holon bus
Had to get off at Rehov Pinkas.
But when he got there, the driver went by without stopping.
Charlie couldn't get off of that bus.

Chorus

Now all day long, Charlie rides through the city with his feet hanging out of the door.
One arm out the window and the other in the trash can
And his face dragging over the floor (spoken: just a typical Egged bus ride).

Chorus

Charlie's wife goes down to Derech Haifa
Kol Yom b'sha'a shalosh.
And through the open window she throws Charlie a felafel
And a clean new set of clothes.

Chorus

Now you citizens of Israel, don't you think it's a scandal?
Don't you think it's a little unjust?
Fight the fare increase and tell the Minister of Transport
To get Charlie off the Egged bus.

Final chorus

Or else he'll never return, no, he'll never return
And his fate will be unlearned.
He will ride forever on the bus of Egged.
He's the man who never returned.
Yes, he's the man who never returned.
(Spoken) Ma nishma, Charlie?
