The Lyrics
University of Kentucky basketball fans, though always fanatically loyal, are suffering the torments of the Inferno this season. John Calipari's signature team of the country's best freshmen already was having trouble gelling into a true unit. Then star center Nerlins Noel suffered a season-ending knee injury and U.K. suffered it's worse basketball loss ever to hated rival Tennessee. Back to the drawing board! Calipari's already recruiting next year's class of "one and done" freshman stars. For the original song, I'm using a later recording by Bill Monroe in which the first verse is a slow waltz in 3/4 time and the second is up-tempo in 4/4.

Blue fans of Kentucky, don't be whining.
This is no time - to turn your tails and run.
'Though for the post season - we are pining
Our big man's hurt. The season may be done.
It's a fact Nerlins No-el - blew his knee straight to hell,
And oh the misery - to get thumped by Tennessee.

The freshman stars of next year, then we'll shout!
"One and done" are college freshmen who accept scholarships and then turn pro after only season at the school. "The Big Dance" is of course the N.C.A.A. tournament. I won't stop rooting for U.K., but I think this is a very foolish policy. I, however, have coined a brand new "mountain metaphor"...rarer than a senior on the U.K. basketball team. ;D
