twenty-six thousand tons in her hold
Greatest boat of the lakes, with name Edmund Fitzgerald
And Zug Island was her port of call

She steamed Lake Superior on tenth of November
in a hard weather and her skipper said:
"When we cross that Whitefish Point Beacon
we can anchor at Isle Roy-ale"

It was a mighty rough weather at the Great Lakes that evening
they reported some five meter waves
It was in this weather when she lost her vent covers
and the storm heavy spraying had made

And she was steaming on the lake making fourteen miles per hour
when a rogue wave broke into her bow
The skipper Ed Sorley aired his last message
it sounded "We are holding our own"

When a telegram came to the Detroit Harbour
this is how it read:
"Disaster has hit, sunk has brave Ed Fitzgerald"
she is lying on Superior's bed"

So all you sailors, you'd better take this warning
from this time now on and learn
