The Lyrics

I now offer another contribution to Wendy's Lord Of The Rings collection. The coronation of Aragorn as King Elessar of the Reunited Kingdom (Arnor and Gondor) marked not only the end of Sauron's power but also the beginning of the Fourth Age (The Age of Men). My choice of Rule Britannia as the original song is not just due to Wendy's nationality. Although I am shamelessly American (with all of the blessings and faults in abundance), Rule Britannia is one of THE greatest patriotic songs ever written. This version was sung by the incomparable Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel at the 2008 Last Night of the Proms concert. The third line of each verse varies in beats and syllables. I hope this is worthy of the final major human event of the trilogy. ;D

Isildur's heir, and Rivendell-raised,
This Ranger chief, both just and wise.
(This Ranger chief, both just and wise.)
Mighty in battle, these deeds remained unpraised,
His lineage hidden from foul eyes.

Hail Elessar! Elessar Telcontar!
Hail Queen - Arwen who the elves call Evenstar.
Claim the throne that's - ordained for you from birth.
You're the - greatest human king of Middle Earth.

He saved the hobbits - from fell foes.
He joined the quest to break the Ring.
(He joined the quest to break the Ring.)
Fought with Rohan, at Helm's Deep dealt hard blows,
Of this horsemen will ever sing.

Hail Elessar! Once Aragorn of fame,
Now the - Reunited Kingdom hails your name.
To the hobbits - you're Strider and a friend.
Elves, dwarves, - Rohirrim will back you to the end

He led the armies of The Dead
And won the Fields of Pelennor,
(And won the Fields of Pelennor)
Led the forces - to Mordor's gates of dread.
Sauron's cruel realm - exists no more.

Hail Elessar! White Tree and Seven Stars.
Cleanse the - lands of all your realm from Sauron's scars.
(Slower, more majestic tempo)
Time and legend - now turn another page.
With your - coming we begin the new - Fourth - Age!

Composer Thomas Augustine Arne, not content with this rousing anthem alone, also authored a version of "God Save The King (Queen)" and a folkish tune which we use for A'Hunting We Will Go (The Farmer In The Dell).

I know less than nothing about the LOTR, and the same about the original song...but don't want you to end up in the NC section..I hate when that happens to me...

Thanks all. Susanna - I am impressed but not surprised that you know the high Elven language. ;D
