The Lyrics

Part 2 of "The Unfortunates", my re-write of "Les Miserables". The original is a tragedy set in Paris in the nineteenth century; mine is a comedy set in the UK present day. Connor, my main character, was a banker jailed for fraud and breaking a bank (as per the Prologue submitted yesterday). Here he has trouble keeping a job and turned away wherever he goes. The lyrics appear strange but are an accurate re-write of the original.
TRYING TO FIND WORK

Connor
Out through the gates. It’s bloody cold!
Must find a coat. I must keep warm.
Where’s the station? How long the waiting.
I need a drink; I’ve lost my taste
It’s been so long, oh what a waste.

Where to go now? Who can I see?
All think me guilty, poor ol’ me!
A new day starts…so let me see
Where this train ride will now take me.

(He finds work in an estate agents)

Estate Agent
I’m sorry mate, I’m afraid you’ll have to go.
Houses just aren’t selling right now
And business is slow.

Connor
I haven’t had time to show what I can do!
These houses you have, I can sell for you.

Agent 2
You’ve got no chance, as anyone here can see.
With no previous experience like others here and me.

Connor
I find it hard to get some work
They think I’m bad, a rotten jerk, a sorry tale,
As when I try for any post, they do a check and
Find that I’ve been in jail.
And very soon I hear them say “Sod off, be on your way!”

(He comes to a B&B)

B&B Owner
Sorry, no rooms, and I’ve run out of food.
Your face is familiar; you’ve been up to no good.

Connor
I can pay you up front, I will sleep on a couch.
It’s freezing cold out here. I’m really not that bad!

B&B Owner
Be on your way or I’ll call the police.
We don’t want your type here, we live in peace.
(He moves on)
