Original Song Title:

"Skylark"

Original Performer:

Dinah Shore

Parody Song Title:

"Shylock"

Parody Written by:

Al Silver

The Lyrics

REFRAIN 1

Shylock
Have you anything to lend to me
Shall I tell you who my friend can be
Of my Antonio you're not fond
But he has said he'd put up bond

REFRAIN 2

Oh Shylock
Is your daughter in a gondola
Where Lorenzo likes to fondle her
If she has to be with boys
Must they all be lousy goys?

VERSE

About collateral:
There is a pound of flesh to serve you well
(Don't mix with dairy)
Cruel are the usurer's terms
Crooked as his beak
Sad as a geezer trying hard not to creak

REFRAIN 3

Oh Shylock
I don't know if you can change your ways
But you've made things rotten for the J's
So if it's kosher anywhere
Lead me out of there

Al - If you prick us, do we not bleed? It you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you delight us, do we not give fives? ;D

This was an old shmoozie by one of my favorite songbirds of that era. In the version I listened to, there was an extra refrain and verse. Try to link your parodies to the version you used and follow the versification absolutely. Almost everything you could name is out there on YouTube these days, and I find it the most convenient source. For above reason, have to peg your score back a little here.

Dinah did a reprise. Since the reprised versification was not composed of new lyrics, I chose not to bore with slavish repetition. The YouTube references to originals was my suggestion, especially with respect to those of Ella Fitzgerald.

Nice job Al! I don't know The Merchant of Venice that well, but I do know of Shylock. :^)
